Tuesday 27th November 2001 - UniBond League Cup Group Match

FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1-4 WORKSOP TOWN

The Blues lost their unbeaten run after conceding three goals in the last nineteen minutes of this UniBond League Cup to all but go out of this season's competition. The Blues had been boosted by the news that Andy Evans was staying at the club, although Graham Lewis was absent due to illness with his place being taken by Scott Collins.

The visitors went close on 5 minutes with Martin Kearney saving an 18 yard shot on the turn from Todd whilst the Blues responded with a Steve Oleksewycz snapshot forcing a good save from Holmshaw. A minute later Oleksewycz again caused the Tigers problems as he got away down the right before cutting into the box but his final shot was weeak from around 15 yards. A good move on 16 minutes was started by Simon Collins who picked out Pete Myers on the right. His cross was met by Oleksewycz but a defender managed to take the sting out of it, leaving Holmshaw to collect easily. On 28 minutes Rob Hanby threaded a through ball between two Worksop defenders for Oleksewycz to run on to into the box but he was brought down by Ludlam as he shaped to shoot, leaving the referee no alternative but to point to the spot. STEVE PRICE confidently converted the penalty to give the Blues a deserved lead. However, eight minutes later the visitors were level when a free-kick from the right was headed in at the far post by Todd. Simon Collins came close to scoring a goal reminiscent of Paul Gascoigne against Scotland in Euro '96 when he flicked the ball over a defender's head on the edge of the box but as he was about to shoot Kotylo got back to take the ball off Collin's boot end and whack it ball inches wide of the left hand post for a corner. On the stroke of half time Gray went in late on Kearney as he gathered an over hit through ball and received a yellow card for his trouble whilst Kearney was OK to carry on after lengthy treatment.

The second half saw the Tigers exert more pressure on the Blues with Kearney being forced to save from point blank range from Whitehead on 58 minutes whilst two minutes later Gray flashed an angled shot side of the left hand post. The Blues were now finding it hard to create the openings they had managed in the first half as Worksop started to gain the upper hand. Kearney saved a 25 yard shot from Townsend at the second attempt on 66 minutes but a minute later a sliced goalkick by Holmshaw almost lead to the Blues retaking the lead. Simon Collins picked the loose ball up on the left and immediately played a good ball in towards Evans but, at full stretch, he could only manage to guide it into the side netting. The Blues were made to pay four minute later when a ball into the Blues' box was turned goalwards but Kearney blocked with his legs only for Gray to follow up and score. Six minutes later and 18 yard effort from Townsend hit the side netting with Kearney beaten and on 80 minutes Whitehead hit the inside of the left hand post with Andy Smith being the first to react to stroke the ball into an empty net. Two minutes later Townsend picked the ball up on the right and cut into the box along the dead ball line and with everyone expecting him to try and pick out a Worksop player in the six yard box be cleverly advanced to the near post and shot through Kearney's legs to score Worksop's fourth.
