WORKSOP TOWN 1-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

After giving such a poor display at Vauxhall on Saturday the Blues bounced back with a much more convincing effort at Worksop Town and deserved to come away with more than just the solitary point earned. Mark Wilkinson was recalled in goal whilst Mark Ogley was fit to return to the defence. Rob Hanby was moved to the left back position in place of Chris Gowan and he admirably kept Chris Waddle quiet. Up front Graham Lewis was partnered by Andy Evans, a forward signed from Stalybridge Celtic who added a bit of much needed height to the forward-line.

The Blues almost got off to a flying start when in the second minute Simon Collins hit a fantastic crossfield ball from right to left to pick out Lewis on the edge of the box who hit a tremendous first time volley against the outside of the left hand post with the keeper beaten - had that gone in it would have graced any 'Goal of the Season' competition. Nine minutes later the Blues had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down as a Worksop defender handled following a mistake by the keeper but the referee was having none of it. A minute later Lewis sent over a cross from the right which Evans did well to get a boot to but all he could do was direct it over the bar from 6 yards. Evans then had another chance as he headed Collins' left wing corner agonisingly over the bar as the Blues looked the most likely to score. The home side were creating very little with Waddle hardly getting a touch but they came close to snatching the lead against the run of play on 28 minutes. A harmless looking cross from the right looked as though it would be gathered easily enough by Mark Wilkinson but he took his eye off the ball and dropped it at the feet of the onrushing Worksop no. 11. who he pulled back as he tried to retrieve the ball. The referee immediately pointed to the spot but Wilkinson made amends with a terrific save, diving to his left. The Blues returned to the attack with Steve Price putting a 25 yard shot inches wide of the right hand post whilst, on the stroke of half time, Soner Zumiutell found himself with the ball at his feet just inside the box but as he was about to advance on goal the Assistant Referee decided he was offside when he Worksop centre half who was stood in the centre of the box appealing for offside was playing him on by at least 4 yards!

More was seen of the home side as an attacking force after the break but the Blues still created the better chances. However, on 52 minutes Worksop's lively no.11 broke through the Frickley defence and advanced on Wilkinson's goal but Wilkinson denied him with a great save. Then, 4 minutes later, the referee denied the Blues a clear goalscoring opportunity. Zumiutell was fouled outside the box as he played the ball through to Collins who had taken one touch to beat the last defender and was about to shoot when the referee decided to blow for the foul on Zumiutell and awarded a free-kick 25 yards out - why the hell he didn't let play continue will remain one of life's mysteries!! Justice was finally done ten minutes later. Collins picked out LEWIS with a long ball from midfield and the striker beat his marker for pace before planting a low shot past the keeper from just inside the box. The joy was short lived, however, as on 70 minutes Worksop were awarded a free-kick just over half way. A hopeful ball was launched into the box which looped over a mass of players and struck Dean Jones to deflect the ball past the helpless Wilkinson to give the home side an equaliser they scarcely deserved. On 78 minutes Jones shot over from following Collins' right wing corner whilst three minutes later a Worksop player cut in from the right before sending a dangerous shot across the face of goal.
