WORKSOP TOWN 12-0 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

Embarrasing is just one of a number of words could be used to describe the performance, particularly in the first half, against Worksop Town. After being without Chris Hurst who arrived late, Chris Hilton, Mark Wilkinson and Brendan West were all left out of the starting line-up with Dean Jones being switched to right full-back and James Watson coming into the centre of defence as, once again, Stewart Barrowclough decided to make changes to the side. Also coming in were Chris Higgins, Nicky Cranston, and Scott Collins with Duane Beckett on the bench with Ian Edge

In only the first minute Chris Higgins, making his first start of the season, had to run out to the edge of the area to block a shot but five minutes later the Tigers took the lead. Ryan Davis fired in from close range after a cross was headed back across goal. The Blues came back with Nicky Cranston shooting over the bar from 20 yards but Worksop extended their lead on 15 minutes when Whitehead forced the ball in following a good cross from the left. Craig Goodyear then had an effort disallowed for the Blues for offside before Jackson scored Worksop's third from the penalty spot on 21 minutes. Two minutes later Whitehead added a fourth before Jackson hit the post from another penalty but it wasn't long before Worksop added a fifth when Chris Waddle scored, running on to a bad pass forward which Watson decided not to run for and then placing his shot past Higgins. Just as things looked as though they couldn't get any worse before half time Jackson added a sixth on 45 minutes. Dean Jones was helped off with a knee injury to be replaced by Ian Edge.

The second half saw Fox and Brooks replaced by Beckett and Poppleton as the Blyues finally started to play a bit of football. Beckett started to create some space down the left and managed to get a couple of crosses in as did Edge down the right but defensively the Blues were still struggling. On 65 minutes Whitehead made it 7-0 after Higgins blocked his first effort and the second looked to have been cleared off the line but the Assistant Referee signalled a goal. Cranston then had a shot blocked and Hanby's follow-up was deflected for a corner as the Blues applied a bit of pressure but Worksop continued to score at will. Jackson completed his hat-trick to make it 8-0 on 75 minutes before he again score, with a tap-in, two minutes later after Waddle had split the defence. On 79 minutes Higgins was adjudged to have brought Clark down when in reality he never touched him but the referee pointed to the spot and sent Higgins off with Watson taking over in goal. Jackson converted the penalty. A minute later things got even worse as Scott Collins dived in on a Worksop player and others joined in with the referee, when he had restored order, deciding to send Cranston off and book Collins (what a surprise, no Worksop player booked when substitute Hibbins flew in with fists flying). To round the match off Clark and Jackson added the last two.

After a performance like that you have to wonder about the manager's tactics. Why play Dean Jones, a quality central defender and our only tall defender, at right full back and play two players who are essentially midfield players as centre backs when they are lacking in height and pace? Why again make so many changes? What chance have the players got when a settled team is never played? The list is goes on...

What chance the players can raise their game for Saturday.
