Saturday 9th February - Worksop Town 0-1 Frickley Athletic (AET) A reshuffled squad showed skill and stamina to conquer
Worksop in extra-time of this UniBond Challenge Cup tie and join Eastwood Town
or Ilkeston Town,
Skelmersdale United and Gateshead,in the semi-finals. Hit by injuries, suspensions and cup-tied players, manager
Billy Heath conjured up a fourth consecutive victory for the Blues with another
performance of determination from the whole squad. Craig Smith, from Wakefield, took over the number two shirt
with Chris Davies, signed recently from Spalding United, coming into the
midfield and local product Darren Barrick starting on the subs bench. There was a let-off for the visitors in the opening minute
when Kevin Sanasy beat Jon Hood to a through ball and flicked it towards
goal but Dean Jones managed to intercept and turn it out for a corner. Andy White sent Sanasy clear in the eighth minute but Hood
got down well to push his low shot away. It took time for Frickley to settle, but Steve Oleksewycz
broke down the right in the 22nd minute but his shot was off target, and the
Tigers responded with former Blues defender Antony Jackson heading just
wide at the far post, following a corner kick from the right on the half hour. Ashley Vickers, who replaced Craig Smith after 57 minutes,
was soon in the action, charging down a clearance 25 yards out five minutes
later and shaving the bar with a first time half volley. Two minutes later, Chris White beat Terry Earnshaw and cut
inside before hitting a low 15 yard shot which Worksop keeper Steve Hernandez
just managed to parry and the ball was switched to the other end where Andy
White had a header turned round a post by Hood. When a corner kick was only half cleared in the 67th
minute, Danny Walsh rifled in a 20 yard volley, which Hernandez managed to turn
off target, and the keeper was able to hold onto the ball
eight minutes later after Walsh had tried his luck from 30 yards. A glancing header from Andy White went just wide of the far
post after a left wing corner by Town in the 81st minute, while Chris White had
a 30 yard scorcher saved by Fernandez three minutes later. Only two minutes of extra-time had elapsed when Chris White
picked up a loose ball and drilled a 30 yard shot just inside the far post with
the Worksop keeper rooted to the spot. There was a scare for the Blues two minutes from the end when Jackson headed over after going up for a corner kick, but it was Frickley who emerged victorious.
