Saturday 20th December - Workington 3-1 Frickley Athletic

A patched up Blues side went out of the UniBond President's Cup at the first round as they suffered a 3-1 defeat at First Division Workington in terrible conditions. Phil Sharpe was without the services of the injured Lee Morris, Antony Jackson, Mark Samways and Michael Blythen whilst Paul Marquis and Mark Vickerage were still suffering from illness whilst Gary Hatto was absent due to a family illness. In came Jon Hood in goal with Chris Fawcus (from Maltby MW) playing at left-back. Phil Lindley and Steve Robinson occupied the central defensive positions with Sean Singh joining Dale Rimmington in midfield. Gerard McCargo partnered Dan Sheriffe up front.

Both sides struggled to get to grips with the game on a quagmire of a pitch and it was the home side who had the first good chance of the game when Steve Archibald managed to get clear into the Blues' box but Hood did well to get an outstretched right hand to the shot and deflect it wide. After 17 minutes the Blues managed their first decent attempt at goal when a cleared corner was turned back into the box by Robinson only for Sheriffe to firs just wide of the right hand post from close range. The home side took the lead after 31 minutes when Hood blocked Archibald's initial shot but Robert Ennis was on hand to tap into an empty net. Just four minutes later the blues leveled the scores with a well worked goal which started with Fawcus who played the ball down the left to Scott Brough who fed Rimmington inside him and he played the ball in to McCARGO who took one touch before firing in from 15 yards. The joy was short lived as on 43 minutes Archibald's attempted pass deflected rather luckily off Duncan Richards into the path of Glenn Murray who fired an angled shot across Hood and inside the far post.

Shortly after the resumption McCargo managed to get clear of Matthew Henney but was unable to get away in the mud and was forced to check outside the box. He then turned inside and curled a left foot shot just wide of the left hand post. The home side put the tie beyond the Blues' reach on 56 minutes when Will Varty's free-kick from half way was met by the head of Blues' defender Fawcus as he tried to prevent the ball reaching Ennis but all he managed to do was loop the ball over Hood and into the empty net. The Blues did go close on 71 minutes when Rimmington glanced a header just wide of the far post from Brough's left wing cross and then a minute from time Brough saw his 30 yarder well saved at the foot of the post by Kevin Wolfe.
