Saturday 19th November - Frickley Athletic 2-0 Witton Albion

This game is available on DVD/Video - See Club Shop

A goal in each half from Leroy Chambers earned the Blues three crucial points against a Witton Albion side who had defeated the Blues in the reverse fixture last week. Chambers headed his first goal after 23 minutes following a great run from Martyn Woolford whilst his second goal came on 73 minutes as he lashed the ball into the net from 15 yards after Witton failed to clear a corner.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat at Witton last week Gary Marrow opted to change the Blues' formation as he started with Alex Callery and Martyn Woolford playing up front with Leroy Chambers whilst the midfield comprised of Calum Selby, Lee Pugh and Phil Lindley.

Both sides started the game positively as early corners were forced at both ends. Lee Pugh forced the first save of the game after 8 minutes as he fired in a low shot from 25 yards which Jon Kennedy saved at the foot of the left hand post. Shortly afterwards a sliced pass from Pugh saw Steve Robinson exposed as the last defender with the ball being headed over him to send Mike Moseley clear but he fired well wide as Gary Ingham closed him down. At the other end Pugh teed up Selby whose 25 yard shot was deflected just over the bar. From the resulting corner Steve Kennedy met Selby's flag kick with a goalbound header from 6 yards but it struck the covering defender on the line and was cleared. Minutes later Pugh threaded a great ball inside Steve Connors for Callery but his shot from inside the box was deflected wide of the right hand post by Jon Kennedy's outstretched leg. Witton then had another great chance to take the lead when a long clearance saw Mark Peers again break clear, this time down the left but Ingham held his ground well to narrow the angle with Moseley eventually shooting straight at Ingham. Griff Jones was the next to threaten the Blues' goal when he latched onto a long pass down the Witton tight to flick the ball over Kennedy to leave him self clear inside the box but, as Ingham came out he lobbed the ball over both Ingham and the goal. The Blues took the lead on 42 minutes when Nicky Heinemann's clearance was miss-controlled by Tom Spearritt, allowing Woolford to seize on the loose ball to burst clear down the left. Kennedy came out to meet him but Woolford pushed the ball past him and crossed to the near post where CHAMBERS headed in (Click here for video).

The Blues went close to extending their lead early in the second half when Selby's corner was only half cleared, allowing Woolford to play the ball back into the box but Simon Collins could only stab the ball over the bar from 6 yards. Lindley then saw his 18 yard shot comfortably saved by Jon Kennedy before Moseley threatened to break clear again but Heinemann caught his right ankle some 35 yards out. With Heinemann already having been booked Moseley made an over-the-top dive to try and get Heinemann sent off but the referee wasn't impressed, choosing only to award the free-kick. Lindley then played a great ball to Callery on the right hand edge of the Witton box but his angled shot flew just past the far post. The Blues finally increased their lead on 73 minutes when Callery's corner was half cleared as far as Pugh who headed the ball back to the edge of the box where Lindley flicked it into the path of CHAMBERS who lashed the ball into the top left hand corner from just inside the box (Click here for video). Jon Kennedy then misjudged Selby's high free-kick as he completely missed the ball but, luckily for him, the ball struck the back of Chambers' head and Woolford's shot was then charged down. On 79 minutes Selby saw his right wing corner strike the top of the crossbar with Jon Kennedy struggling to get there whilst minutes later Woolford almost seized on a long pass from Collins but Jon Kennedy was out quickly to block as Woolford tried to stab the ball past him.
