Tuesday 29th January - Whitby Town 0-1 Frickley Athletic Frickley gained revenge for falling double victims to
Whitby in the League with a deserved triumph at Town in their Unibond League
Challenge Cup 3rd round tie. Manager Billy Heath experimented with the Blues attack,
putting Martin Thacker, who has been playing with Hall Road Rangers, together
with Dean Wilburn and Steve Oleksewycz, while Chris White returned on the
left flank. A good run by Wilburn in the tenth minute saw his pass find
Chris Hilton, whose first time drive from 25 yards was tipped round a post
by John Bell. The home side responded with Andy Burton cutting in from the
right after 20 minutes and putting over a cross which Karl Charlton headed
powerfully but Jon Hood grasped the ball firmly. Adam Pollock beat the home keeper which a tightly angled
shot which zipped across the face of goal and just past the far post in the 31st
minute, while Oleksewycz fired wide from 15 yards when well placed two minutes
later. Whitby threatened after the interval with Alex Janes
forcing his way just inside the penalty area after a run down the left in the
56th minute, but the ball was calmly cleared and Frickley took the lead two
minutes later. A free-kick from Chris White on the right was only half
cleared and when the ball was popped back into the penalty area, Chris Hilton
drilled it through a mass of players and just inside the right hand post from 12
yards. Oleksewycz got clear on the hour but saw his angled shot
deflected off the line and from the corner kick, the Blues striker rattled the
bar before the home defence booted the ball clear. Town created a penetrating attack down the right in the
62nd minute resulting in Charlton striking an upright with a strong shot,
and Oleksewycz used his pace again to outstrip the home cover a minute later
before unleashing a 20 yarder which Bell did well to parry. White cut in from the left in the 83rd minute and put a
stinging shot inches wide of the far post as the visitors finished in control
although there was a slight scare two minutes later when Charlton threatened to
burst through but was beaten to the ball by the ever alert Hood.
