Tuesday 16th October - Frickley Athletic 0-2 Whitby Town Drastic action is urgently needed to lift Frickley from the
gloom that appears to have enveloped the side who, despite having more than
their fair share of this Unibond Premier Division encounter, again found
themselves empty-handed! Manager Mark Hancock has acquired 18-year-old livewire
Ashley Flynn, who came off the subs bench on the hour to try and lift the Blues
after they had conceded a second goal. He had some promising touches and, had the team's luck been
in, could have crowned his debut with a brace of goals if not a hat trick. Frickley seem to always make things difficult for
themselves, and the failure of the defence to clear a second minute corner
kick saw the ball knocked back from the right by Andy Raw for Alex
Janes to turn into the net from close range and give Town a dream start. Lee Morris had a shot turned behind three minutes later and
then blazed over when the ball dropped to him from the flag kick, while a 45
yard free-kick from Neil Redfearn dropped to an unmarked Craig White who flicked
on for Chris Hilton to curl a cross just behind. In the 14th minute, Andy Hayward broke clear and passed
inside to Morris, but he scuffed his shot and it was easily collected by David
Campbell, and White then went close after a probing home attack. There was a let-off for the Blues in the 22nd minute, Adam
Pollock clearing off the line from Charlton, but it was Frickley who seemed the
more dangerous, White having an angled 18 yard drive held by Campbell in the
29th minute, while Redfearn shaved an upright with a first time effort
after 38 minutes. Jon Hood raced out to block a breakaway by Danny Brunskill
in the 42nd minute while, at the other end, Chris Hilton threaded a pass
through to White whose angled drive struck a defender and was held by Campbell. There was misfortune for the home side just after the
interval, Hilton being penalised for hands in the 56th minute, and Brunskill
improving Whitby's advantage from the resulting spot kick. Flynn headed over an open goal in the 62nd minute and got
clear a minute later, drawing the keeper out before passing inside to
Hayward whose shot was turned off the line by Ashley Lyth. Danny Walsh won a ball in his own half in the 74th minute and
ran forward before picking out Redfearn whose first time effort shaved an
upright, Flynn having a shot diverted behind a minute later and then Steve
Robinson drilled over a low cross in the 78th minute, but Hayward scooped the
ball from six yards. Town were getting worried, and Walsh had a sizzling 30
yarder held by Campbell at the second attempt in the 84th minute as the visitors
rode their luck to keep the opposition at bay.
