Saturday 16th October - Whitby Town 3-1 Frickley Athletic Gary Marrow was forced to make one change to the side with Steve Kennedy unavailable due to a prior arrangement made before he joined the club, so Wayne Benn returned to the side. He slotted into the midfield with Lee Pugh moving to right fullback and Steve Robinson to centre-back. New signing Dean Foley was on the subs. bench. In cool and wet conditions the game got off to a fairly even start with Frickley enjoying a reasonable amount of possession in the home half of the pitch but Whitby were the side that were creating the better chances. After just 10 minutes David McTiernan saw his 25 yard shot well saved by Shackelton whilst 2 minutes later a long ball from midfield was headed inside by by Nicholas Scaife on the left for Anthony Ormerod to shoot inches wide of the left hand post from 18 yards when he ought to have done better. Frickley had another let-off on 16 minutes when a cross from the right eluded Calum Selby and fell for Scott Nicholson who turned and shot straight at Shackelton. The home side took the lead with a rather dubious goal on 20 minutes. Shackelton tried to claim a high cross from the right but was challenged by Nicholson who forced the ball into the net and also left Shackelton with a broken nose but the referee decided that the goal stood and waved away protests that Shackelton had been fouled. Frickley then had another set-back when Steve Robinson was forced off through injury and he was replaced by Lee Wilkinson who took up the right full-nack position. Steve Woolford moved to centre-half and Pugh into midfield. Selby had Frickley's first real attempt at goal on 25 minutes but his 25 yard free-kick found the side netting. Three minutes later Whitby were awarded their own free-kick 25 yards out but to the right and Craig Veart struck a perfect shot into the top right hand corner giving Shackelton no chance. Frickley had a chance to pull a goal back 2 minutes later when Benn's quickly taken free-kick saw him play the ball in to Adam Russell on the edge of the box. He laid it off to Richard Tracey whose rising 20 yard shot cleared the bar. On the stroke of half time Whitby's Liam Gildea, who had already been booked, tangled with Selby on half way before holding Selby to the ground by his throat, leaving the referee no option but to show Gildea a second yellow card and therefore a red. Playing against ten-men for the second half there was hope that something could be salvaged from the game. Russell went close on 62 minutes when he turned and shot from 18 yards but his shot was straight at David Campbell whilst 2 minutes later Pugh fed Adam Oldham who put the ball in the net but the effort was ruled out for offside. On 69 minutes Tracey cut in from the right before firing in a shot from 20 yards which struck the arm of Danny Farthing in the box and fell to Wilkinson but his snapshot was easily saved. Frickley were enjoying periods of pressure but were susceptible to quick breaks by the home side who just left one forward up front on his own during the second half. Russell again turned and shot from the edge of the box but this time Capbell could only parry the shot and it spun out for a corner before Tracey could retrieve it. As time started to run out, Whitby started to look dangerous again and Scaife should have done better when he headed wide of the far post when unmarked as he latched on to a cross from the right. On 87 minutes Whitby wrapped the game up when Veart's through ball sent Ormerod clear and he easily took the ball past Shackelton and rolled it into an empty net. Frickley managed a consolation goal 2 minutes into stoppage time when Oldham played the ball into the box from the left and Campbell fumbled it for TOM THORNTON to tap into an empty net.
