Tuesday 14th October - Whitby Town 2-2 Frickley Athletic

Trailing by a brace at the break, Frickley produced a superb second half to share the spoils 2-2 in the UniBond Premier Division game at Whitby.

Steve Robinson was absent ill, while Jonathan Groome had to come off in the 54th minute after his shoulder popped out again, but the Blues battled well and were unlucky not to turn the tables.

Carl Charlton got away down the left for Town and cut inside but his low shot was well saved by visiting goalkeeper Adam Nicklin, who was in action again in the 13th minute, holding a 20 yard drive by Danny Brunskill after he had been put through by Steve Higgins.

Whitby took the lead in the 28th minute, Jimmy Beadle leaving Nicklin stranded as he rifled a 30 yarder into the top right hand corner.

Frickley almost equalised a minute later, Groome whipping a cross over to the far post where Lee Morris headed down but the ball was blocked by a defender's arm although appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears.

Rob Pell snapped up a pass from Groome on the right in the 37th minute and struck a 15 yard volley which Nick Liversedge did well to turn round an upright.

After Michael Rae had gone close for Town with a shot in the 40th minute, the recent acquisition from Gateshead had better fortune two minutes later, turning on the edge of the penalty area and hitting a shot which Nicklin managed to get a hand to but could not prevent going into the net.

Frickley resumed in determined fashion, Chris Davies shaving the bar with a 25 yard free-kick in the 47th minute while Scott Turner produced an accurate cross from the right a minute later which Davies drilled into the net from 15 yards to reduce the arrears.

Danny Walsh sent Morris down the middle in the 53rd minute, only for him to be upended by Phil Brumwell  25 yards out, and Chris Gowen had a low free-kick punched to safety by Liversedge.

Shaun Pierrepont replaced Groome as Frickley continued to press, Turner creating space on the right in the 64th minute and finding Chris Hilton, whose cross was headed just wide by Morris.

A rare Whitby raid led to Tony Hackworth receiving the ball six yards out, but his shot was blocked by Nicklin who recovered rapidly to smother the rebound.

A free-kick by Dean Jones went just wide at the other end a minute later, and Morris controlled a long clearance from Nicklin in the 77th minute and flicked it over Richard Forster before lifting his shot over from eight yards.

Chris White cut in from the left in the 80th minute and crossed for Pierrepont whose shot was blocked by the arm of Leon Scott, which earned the Town defender a second yellow card and his marching orders.

Morris converted the spot kick, and the Blues almost snatched victory five minutes later, White cutting in from the left but being foiled by a fine save from Liversedge.
