Tuesday 18th April - Wakefield-Emley 0-0 Frickley Athletic The Blues had to be content with a solitary point after failing to break down a stubborn Wakefield-Emley defence that were determined to keep the Blues at bay by one means or another. With Simon Collins injured Steve Kennedy replaced him in midfield with Steve Heath coming in to partner Matt Daly in central defence. The Blues started the game well with Mark Ward having three chances in quick succession. Firstly he forced Andy Woods to tip his fierce 25 yard shot over the bar whilst minutes later he headed an Alex Callery cross just over the bar. Next he headed another Callery cross just wide of the far post. However, it was the home side who almost snatched an unlikely lead when Steve Kenworthy's speculative effort beat Gary Ingham but hit the top of the crossbar. Wakefield's Niall O'Brien could count himself extremely fortunate to remain on the field after only receiving a yellow card for a deliberate elbow on Daly.Five minutes before half time good work by Kennedy down the left saw him cut the ball back for Callery whose first powerful shot from just inside the box beat Woods but was headed off the line by Lennie Curtis. Then, on the stroke of half time, Callery's attempted overhead kick from 6 yards took the ball away from Peter Duffield who looked about to score when unmarked at the far post. The home defence continued to lead a charmed life during the second half as Callery's looping header forced Woods to tip the ball over the bar whilst Ward miss-kicked from 12 yards when set up brilliantly by Kennedy. Substitute Rob Pell was the next Blues' culprit in front of goal when Ward sent him clear down the left of the box but he sliced his shot well wide. Martyn Woolford went close on 72 minutes but his strong 25 yard shot was blocked by Woods whilst strong claims for a penalty fell on deaf ears when Daly was blatantly pushed to the ground as he tried to flick on a Steve Robinson long throw. Shortly afterwards another Robinson throw-in was half cleared to Daly on the edge of the box but his first time volley flew inches wide of the right hand post with Woods rooted to the spot. On 78 minutes Ward fed Callery inside the Wakefield box and he found room to fire in an angled shot which Woods did well to turn around his near post. As time started to run out the home side threatened on the counter-attack and went close with a angled shot into the side netting.
