Saturday 30th November - Vauxhall Motors 4-2 Frickley Athletic The Blues suffered a cruel exit from this season's FA Trophy competition with Vauxhall scoring three times in the last five minutes - just after Lee Morris had given the Blues the lead for the second time. Despite being barely able to field a side, the Blues played well and deserved far more for their efforts in an entertaining game. Already without Remo Nesa, Jon Wordsworth and Ryan Williams the Blues were also without Mark Hine due to family commitments whilst Andy Evans failed to show. The Blues started the game well and could easily have been a couple of goals to the good within the first 5 minutes but they had to settle for one. With barely 3 minutes on the clock Curtis Bernard seized on a mistake by a defender to release Chris Newton whose low first time shot from the edge of the box was tipped against the right hand post by Andy Ralph before being knocked behind for a corner by a defender. The resulting corner from the left somehow eluded Ralph at his near post, leaving LEE MORRIS to head in from almost on the line. less then sixty seconds later and the lead could have been doubled when good work by Bernard saw him cut into the box from the left and fee Newton but his shot from 8 yards was well smothered by Ralph. The home side's first effort at goal came on 12 minutes when Peter Cumiskey cut inside from the left before shooting straight at Mark Samways but out of nowhere the home side found themselves level on 17 minutes. A high ball from half way was launched into the Blues box towards Cumiskey who nipped in between Morris and Samways with the ball finishing in the net but without Cumiskey seemingly getting a touch. Vauxhall now started to enjoy more possession and created a few half chances with Samways saving well from Terry Fearns on 25 minutes and then again from the same player eight minutes later. The Blues responded with Nigel Henstock seeing his low 20 yard shot well saved by Ralph but seconds later Antony Jackson, who had already been booked, let Fearns get past him in the box but he shot over from a narrow angle. The home side missed a good chance on 42 minutes when Danny Collins sent a back post header inches wide from a deep cross from the left. Vauxhall started the second half the better of the two sides with Samways stretching to save a looping effort from Fearns on 48 minutes whilst two minutes later Chris Gowen lost the ball down the left to Steve Aspinall who crossed to Nicky Young but his shot was cleared off the line by Duncan Richards. The Blues started to come back into the game and Newton chipped inches over the bar from 15 yards but Vauxhall again saw an effort cleared off the line on 60 minutes when Richards again cleared another Young effort which had beaten Samways. It was then Frickley's turn to create chances as on 69 minutes a good run by Bernard into the box saw his cross flicked away from Newton by a defender but it fell to Morris whose angled shot went over the bar. Seconds later Bernard got clear down the left and cut into the box but as Ralph came out he chipped the ball over the bar from a very acute angle. Bernard was the provider on 79 minutes when he sent over a cross which Morris could only knock against the bar from 6 yards. On 83 minutes the Blues scored what everyone thought could be the winner. Newton picked up the ball in midfield and ran at the defence before feeding the overlapping MORRIS who slotted the ball past Ralph from 15 yards. However, just two minutes later a cross from the Vauxhall right found its way to the unmarked Cumiskey who scored from 12 yards. But Vauxhall hadn't finished there as they immediately attacked down their right again and this time when the cross came over Fearns knocked the ball past Samways at the near post. Then, as the Blues pushed forward and the game entered stoppage time a mix-up between Gowen and Newton on half way saw Vauxhall break away and add an undeserved fourth through Nick Welton. Frickley Athletic : Samways, Richards, Gowen, Elkin, Jackson, Marquis, Hancock, Morris, Bernard, Newton, Henstock (Marsh 77). Unused sub. Sharpe Attendance : 185 |
