Saturday 1st March - Vauxhall Motors 5-0 Frickley Athletic

Frickley went down to their second successive heavy defeat as they were well beaten by a stronger and better organised Vauxhall side. Phil Sharpe again had to juggle his side as Mark Hancock served a one match suspension for an accumulation of bookings but Gary Reece was available and he came in at right full back in place of Duncan Richards whilst Kieran O'Brien returned at left fullback, allowing Gary Hatto to play further forward.

Frickley had hardly been out of their own half before the home side took the lead on 8 minutes. Carl Nesbitt played a deep free-kick from the right into the box for the unmarked Terry Fearns to head past Mark Samways from 10 yards. Five minutes later Derek Ward picked up a knock down by Matt Haddrell only to see his 20 yard shot deflected just wide of Samways' right hand post. Samways was then called into action to push away a speculative angled volley from Peter Cumiskey before Frickley finally managed their first attempt on goal after 23 minutes. O'Brien's cross from the left was headed down by Curtis Bernard to Lee Morris whose powerful first time volley from 25 yards went just wide of the left hand post. Minutes later Morris repeated the feat but this time his shot clipped the outside of the right hand post. Vauxhall were soon back on the attack with Carl Nesbitt getting clear of Antony Jackson on 33 minutes but Samways got down well to smother his shot but 2 minutes later Vauxhall extended their lead. Frickley failed to clear from the edge of the box, allowing Cumiskey to pick the ball up and burst through the defence before Haddrell took the ball off him to lift it over Samways from around 12 yards. Samways was again the saviour on 38 minutes when this time Fearns broke clear but again Samways got down well to smother the shot.

The start of the second half saw Frickley enjoy their best spell in the game and they could well have pulled a goal back within 60 seconds of the restart. O'Brien sent over a deep cross from the left which Steve Robinson met at the far post but goalkeeper Steve Hilton saved comfortably. Robinson then picked up a knock and was replaced by Chris Newton, with Morris dropping into midfield. Within 2 minutes of being on the field Newton saw his powerful 30 yarder well saved by Hilton. Having failed to take advantage of this offensive spell, Frickley were soon back defending as Cumiskey turned well on the edge of the box before shooting just wide of the left hand upright on 60 minutes. Vauxhall went agonisingly close twice within a minute as Steve Aspinall volleyed narrowly over the bar on 74 minutes and then Fearns again got clean through on goal but again Samways denied him. But the inevitable happened on 84 minutes when Haddrell knocked in Vauxhall's third and two minutes later Fearns got clear of Paul Marquis and this time he made no mistake as he steered the ball past Samways from 18 yards. Vauxhall were now well and truely rampant and they added a fifth on 89 minutes when Kevin Lynch knocked the ball into an empty net at the far post after a good run down the left by Robbie Lawton.
