Reports
Wed 9th Jan - Frickley Athletic U19s 3-2 Appleby Frodingham U19s
Frickley U19s went into their first game since the
12th of December looking to defeat lowly Appleby Frodingham, however they were
in for a stern test. Possession was evenly matched for the first 20 minutes, but
neither team could find a way through to goal. Frickley's best early chance came
from Andy Betts' long range effort which travelled narrowly wide, At the other
end, Appleby began to assert themselves and a defensive lapse led to Applebys
number 9 streaking through on goal and slotting past the unlucky Gareth
Wainwright in the Blues goal to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. This goal seemed
to rock the blues, and at times they began bickering amongst each other with
Appleby threatening to add to their lead. They caused several more defensive
scares but, to the credit of centre backs Dave Smith and Dan Jarvis no more
goals were conceded before the break.
Into the second half and the Blues passed
the ball around well early on. They started to look dangerous as Dean Wilburn
began running at the visitors defence, however Appleby to their credit kept the
Blues at bay, whilst their direct and quick attacks meant the Blues had to the
on their toes, with Ash Griffin in particular showing up well. Frickley
began to force more pressure with a trademark long flowing move involving
Wilburn, Cooper and battler, Dean Jarvis leading to a corner. Simon
Fennell swung the ball in but it was cleared only as far as Tom Grindel who
managed to create a great chance for Betts to finish from 12 yards only for a
chasing Appleby man put him under enough pressure to force the shot wide by
inches. More chances followed with the busy Steve Duckenfield having a shot
cleared off the line but with 10 minutes remaining another fantastic run by
Cooper saw him feed DEAN WILBURN who ran through on goal and finished superbly
past the keeper to equalise 1-1.
Both teams were now extremely tired and it
wasn't long until Appleby broke forward and forced several corners, one of which
appeared to go out of play. The ball was then swung back into the path of an
Appleby Man who headed home from 2 yards much too the despair of the Blues. Unfortunately,
the Appleby players found this their chance to go down at every opportunity in
attempt to frustrate the Blues and waste time but in credit the Blues' lads
stuck to the task. Surprisingly enough, although unlikely as it had seemed
in the first half, the Blues rallied round and with 5 minutes to go Betts'
through ball found DUCKENFIELD 1 on 1 with the keeper and the pacey striker
showed no nerves to finish brilliantly through the keepers legs from 10 yards to
level the scores at 2-2. And with just two minutes remaining due to
injuries and stoppages, wingback Griffin played a good through ball to
Jarvis who in turn chipped it into the path of Duckenfield who was tackled but
won the ball back strongly, laying it into the path of midfielder Grindel,
who curled a tremendous cross into the box from 25 yards, On hand was hit
man WILBURN to head home magnificently for 3-2 to the delight of all concerned
bar Appleby.
Frickley deserved their win in the end
trough sheer perseverance but their first half performance had much to be
desired in terms of a team unit. Second half though they were a changed team and
manager Kev Perkins will be pleased with the team's win. The lads are sure to
improve and cut out mistakes with more regular games and training.

Wed 6 Feb -
Arnold Town U19s 0-4 Frickley Athletic U19s
Frickley produced arguably their best performance
of the season away to second placed Arnold Town. But before Kick Off it had
seemed unlikely as the blues found themselves struggling for transport, in the
end though they got to the ground but once changed had to kick off immediately,
with no warm up.
The Blues produced the first chance of the
game after 5 minutes, Mark Coopers clearance finding Steve Duckenfield who
outpaced a defender but shotwide under pressure from the Arnold Keeper.
More pressure followed and in the 10th
minute Dean Jarvis' great looped ball found the speedy DUCKENFIELD
who slotted past the keeper into the far corner of the net from 12 yards. 0-1
Arnold then began to show why they were 2nd
placed in the division creating some good openings, one such chance hitting the
outside of the Frickley post, however the strong centre back pairing of Dan
Jarvis and Dave Smith repelled most of Arnolds aerial balls.
Frickley were winning the right to play with
workaholics Dean Jarvis and Billy Brown breaking down many passing Arnold moves
in the blues midfield.
The pattern of play for the rest of the half
was a great display of breaking down opposition play, neither team stringing
many flowing moves together on the heavy pitch. However the second half was to
be different.
Half Time Arnold Town 0-1 Frickley Athletic
Second Half and Frickley came out of the changing rooms looking strong.
Stringing passes together using wingbacks Paul Hurd and Cooper and Si Fennel to
great effect. Dean Wilburn playing left side began to show his great trickery as
the blues surged forward in waves.
Unfortunately, the linesman in the second
half made it his duty to raise his flag on more than one 'tight' decision,
raising many a blue attack to the ground.
In the 70th Minute the Blues did manage to
break away though Duckenfields through ball finding Tom Grindel on the right who
squared to Andy Betts who unfortunately fired over from 10 yards.
Minutes later captain Dave Smith headed
narrowly wide from Betts free kick from 12 yards, Frickley were now totally
dominating the game. Arnold limited to just sporadic counter attacks but keeper
Gareth Taylor was in fine form despite the wet conditions.
Into the 75th Minute and Frickley scored the
second goal of the game Dean Jarvis' super ball giving the opportunity for BETTS
to round the keeper and fire home confidently from 14 yards. 0-2
The blues won the ball straight back from
kick off and again applied pressure to Arnold who by now were wobbling. A
defensive mishap allowed Betts in a one on one with the home keeper, the result
was inevitable, BETTS finishing with quality and precision from the edge
of the area, to a great cheer from all those with Frickley. 0-3.
Arnold briefly came back into the game
forcing several opportunities but again the Blues out strong and out witted
their opponents. Arnolds number 9 however did stand out for the home side and
showed great ability at times.
With 5 minutes to go the blues finished the
game in style. Wilburn passed inside to Duckenfield who played to Betts. Betts
then played an outstanding ball in to the path of on rushing GRINDEL who out
paced and out muscled a defender before striking past the hapless keeper for his
first goal for the club. 0-4
It is clear to see that if Frickley take
their chances like today they will eliminate draws with the lower placed teams
like at Harworth last week when they struggled to a 2-2 draw. Manager Kevin
Perkins will go home a happy man tonight. The Blues u19s next games are away at
Rotherham United on Tuesday and at home to Arnold Town a week on Wednesday.
Followed by a Home tie against Harworth Colliery a week later.
Thu
28 March - Frickley Athletic 7 - 2 Harworth Colliery
Frickley cruised to victory in this crucial league encounter knowing that they
had to win to keep their promotion chances on track. Frickley needed to pump up
their goal difference and they lads didn't disappoint.
After a strong positive opening spell Frickley took the lead in the 25th minute
when ANDY BETTS fired in from close range after a series of goal mouth
scrambles. 1-0.
However this lead didn't last long Harworth fighting back and scoring on the
break after a defensive mishap whithin a minute. 1-1
Frickley regained the lead after lively Ash Griffin's throw found Billy BROWN in
the box, he turned his man well and fired in a strong shot from close range for
2-1
The Blues piled more pressure on with Andy Betts hitting the wood work as
Harworth became shaky.
Half Time Frickley Athletic 2-1
Harworth Colliery
In the second half, the Blues again looked the liveliest of the two teams, but
it was Harworth who equalised after a good through ball and finish which keeper
Gav Wainwright could not get too. 2-2.
Frickley then stepped through the gears, with Billy BROWN heading down and in
from close range for 3-2 after some lengthy pressure.
Five minutes later BROWN scored again, following up a shot by Steve Duckenfield,
lashing the ball into the net.4-2
Frickley were now running riot as Brown became provider exchanging passes with
Tom Grindel before GRINDEL made space and finished from 12 yards. 5-2
Dean Wilburn, forever a menace down the left, created a number of openings one
of which, following a deflection, BROWN converted from close range for his
fourth of the game, as Harworth looked glum and hurt.
To cap it all off great play between Betts and Naylor resulted in a cross for
GRINDEL who headed down into the Harworth net for goal number seven.
The blues were a complete and utter solid unit in this game and every player
played excellently.
All that is needed is for Frickley to win their final game of the league season
away at Rotherham Utd, or that Appleby lose to league leaders Middlewood,
to ensure promotion for the Blues.
