GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 2-2 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

Frickley brought three more new signings in to make their debut's as they fought back from a goal down at the break to take the lead before being pegged back and having to settle for a draw. Richard Bashforth, Brendan West and Nicky Green all came into the reckoning as James Watson was unavailable and Paul Haywood and Nicky Cranston were left out.

Frickley started the game well as half chances were created at both ends but the home side made the breakthrough, taking the lead on 16 minutes when the Frickley defence allowed a Trinity player to take the ball past two defenders inside the area before cutting the ball back across an open goal to leave a simple tap-in. A minute later Bashforth hooked the ball narrowly over the bar following a right wing corner but that was the closest Frickley came during the first half as Trinity started to take control of the game. On several occasions they missed chances when they looked odds-on to extend their lead but a combination of good defending and bad finishing kept the score at 1-0 at the break.

After the interval Frickley came out a different side, playing with a lot more confidence and within two minutes were back on level terms. Gary Duffty pulled a central defender out of position, going for a through ball that he could never get to which left ANDY HAYWARD to run on to the loose ball and lob the advancing keeper. Frickley were starting to play the ball around much better now and Hayward and Bashforth combined for the latter to send over a deep cross which Mark Lafferty headed goalwards but struck a defender's arm but the referee waved away claims for a penalty.

However, it wasn't long before Frickley took the lead. On 57 minutes Chris Hurst struck a 20 yard drive which came back off the inside of the far post for DUFFTY to knock into the empty goal. Frickley threatened to run riot as two minutes later Bashforth got his head to a corner from the right and Rob Hanby guided it goalwards only for the ball to ricochet to safety off the inside of the post. Then Hanby got on the end of a short corner only to head inches over the bar with the Trinity defence nowhere to be seen.

Then the inevitable happened. Gainsborough won a corner on the right which Frickley's defence couldn't deal with and the ball was scrambled in to level the scores on 73 minutes. Twice Trinity came close to snatching a winner but Frickley deservedly hung on to collect their first point of the season in what was probably a fair result given the chances that Trinity had in the first half and Frickley in the second. Now for the first win of the season on Saturday at Hucknall.!!!!
