Tuesday 5th March 2002 - Sheffield & Hallam Senior Cup Quarter Final

STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS 0-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

The Blues earned a place in the semi-final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup with a fairly comfortable win over Stocksbridge. Rory Prendergast was available as an appeal has been made to the NCEL over his suspension, with Prendergast being available until his appeal is heard. Steve Price was unavailable whilst Andy Evans and Gary Reece were both rested. Mark Place returned to the defence.

There was very little in the way of goalmouth action for the opening 25 minutes or so, although Graham Lewis and Leroy Chambers were both on the receiving end of some crude challenges by the the Steels defence, particularly from Jonathan Brown. The Blues' first strike at goal came on 28 minutes when Prendergast put an angled drive just wide of the right hand post following a good run and lay-off by Lewis down the left. Ten minutes later, Prendergast was involved again as he brilliantly pick out Pete Myers with a cross-field pass from left to right. Myers struck the ball well on the volley from 18 yards but his effort was straight at the keeper.

At half time Leroy Chamber, who had been subjected to some rough treatment was replaced by Andy Evans. Immediately after the break Mark Wilkinson was called into action as he saved well from a close range effort by Illingworth whilst the follow-up shot was headed off the line. The Blues responded with Myers cutting in from the right before firing narrowly wide of the left hand post from 25 yards. Then, on 52 minutes, Prendergast picked up a loose ball down the left and forced his was past three defenders before sending over a great cross which fell nicely for MYERS to knock from close range at the far post. Three minutes later the Blues ought to have been 2-0 up as Myers threaded a ball through to Lewis who was on his own in the box. He turned and saw his shot from 8 yards blocked but, as he was about to shoot again with the keeper on the ground his legs were taken by Brown only for the referee to incredibly wave play on and dismiss claims of a penalty. On 62 minutes a good move was started on half way by Evans who swept the ball out wide to Simon Collins on the right. He fed Lewis on the edge of the box who in turn rolled it into the path of Evans but his low shot from 18 yards was easily saved. The home side rallied briefly but rarely troubled Wilkinson in the Blues goal whilst Frickley were content to attack on the break but couldn't add to their tally.

In tonight's other quarter final ties Doncaster Rovers won 3-0 at Parkgate whilst Emley beat Elmtree 2-0.
