Saturday 15th September - Frickley Athletic 1-2 Stocksbridge PS
It was big time blues for Frickley fans after this
defeat at the hands of Cup bogey side Stocksbridge, who snatched the spoils
with a double blast inside seven minutes midway through the first half.
There was a bright start by the Unibond Premier
side, Scott Turner having an angled shot blocked at point blank range by
Richard Siddall in the fourth minute, and a 20 yard drive from Nathan Hotte
went just wide after 20 minutes.
Frickley's woes began in the 21st minute when Dean
Jones missed a long clearance and Andy Ring nipped round the back to guide the
ball over the advancing Hood.
Ring had an effort cleared off the line by
Chris Gowen and a shot deflected behind before Steels increased their lead in
the 28th minute, a free-kick from Jamie Vardy being flicked in by Adam Oldham.
Stocksbridge almost grabbed a third in the 45th
minute when Matt Telling beat three defenders but crashed his 20 yard drive
against the bar.
A deep cross from Gowen produced a header from
Adam Pollock which Siddall smothered in the 47th minute, but there was
another let-off for the Blues seven minutes later, Jon Hood tipping a powerful
header from John Beggs over the bar.
Frickley reduced the arrears in the 65th minute, a
corner kick being turned into the net by Hotte, and it was hoped it would
inspire the side but they still lacked any definate pattern.
Lee Morris had a 25 yard free-kick turned onto a
post by Siddall in the 77th minute and the keeper held an overhead kick from
Hotte following the resultant corner but, although they forced a series of
corners, Frickley was unable to get the vital equaliser.
