Tuesday 12th November - Sheffield Senior Cup 2nd Round

Frickley Athletic 1-2 Stocksbridge Park Steels

The Blues were without Mark Samways as well as the injured Paul Marquis, Mark Hancock, Craig Elkin and Nigel Henstock whilst Jon Wordsworth left the field after 66 minutes following a nasty tackle.

The visitors went close to taking the lead in only the 3rd minute when James Tevendale forced Richard Siddall to tip over the bar following a cross from the right. The Blues responded three minutes later with Remo Nesa picking up a good cross-field ball to get into the box but he shot wide of the left hand post with the outside of his right foot. On 12 minutes Andy Evans perseverance led to him chasing a lost cause to retrieve the ball down the left of the box before cutting in along the line and laying off to Lee Morris, whose shot was charged down. Five minutes later some good work by Morris saw him shrug ff a couple of challenges before sending over a cross from the right which beat Jamie Holmshaw but came back of the crossbar. From this Stocksbridge immediately broke up field with Chad Colley feeding Paul Green who steered his shot past Siddall from 10 yards. On 19 minutes Steels' John Beggs tried his luck from 25 yards but his shot was straight at Siddall whilst on 25 minutes Jeremy Illingworth failed to make contact at all when well placed in the box. The Blues then finally started to assert themselves and were extremely unlucky not to equalise on 26 minutes. Evans charged down a clearance which fell to Bernard who took the ball into the box before laying off to the overlapping Ryan Williams. Williams' shot was well blocked by Holmshaw but the rebound fell kindly to Bernard who looked odds-on to head into an empty net but somehow a defender popped up to head off the line. As with their first goal, Stocksbridge then broke away and scored, with Illingworth planting a looping angled shot past Siddall. On 32 minutes the Blues finally had a bit of luck when Bernard found some space down the right of the box. He turned and tried to lay the ball off to Williams but his pass was weak, only for a defender to complete the pass for him, and WILLIAMS gratefully accepted to slot the ball home from near the penalty spot. Two minutes later Beggs shot over for Steels.

The Blues went close to levelling the scores on 51 minutes when Williams did well down the left before finding Morris in the box with his back to goal but he turned and shot straight at Holmshaw. The game itself then started to get a bit niggly with Wordsworth being on the receiving end of  a particularly bad tackle from Tevendale which forced him to be replaced by Craig Marsh. It took the blues until the last twenty minutes before they really started to force some pressure in and around the Steels' box. On 71 minutes Evans headed wide from a Chris Gowen cross from the left whilst six minutes later Gowen again fed Evans but this time Evans put his angled shot narrowly over the bar. Paul Peel then replaced the largely ineffective Mark Hine before some good build-up play down the right led to Peel hitting a 20 yard drive which clipped the crossbar on 81 minutes. Remo Nesa then shot wide from the edge of the box when he should have done better whilst on 88 minutes a cross from the left drifted over everyone to Bernard at the back post who controlled the ball before shooting goalwards but Holmshaw blocked his shot. Right at the death Bernard was foiled again when Williams' left wing corner was punched by Holmshaw as far as Bernard who hit a powerful low volley through a crowd of players only to see his effort kicked off the line.
