Tuesday 25th September 2001 - UniBond League Cup Group Match STOCKSBRIDGE PARK STEELS 2-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC With Saturday's important FA Cup tie at Altrincham looming Gary Marrow took the opportunity to leave Graham Lewis on the bench along with Dean Jones, who was able to return after suspension, and Soner Zumrutel. Martin Kearney was also given a run out in goal with centre half Paul Foot coming back into the defence in place of Matt. Wilkinson who was unable to make it to the game before kick off. The Blues started where they left off on Saturday and attacked from the first whistle. After just two minutes Gary Duffty played the ball into the path of Andy Evans whose low 20 yard shot was well held by Turner. The early pressure paid dividends as three minutes later the Blues were in front. Carl Fothergill played a good ball through the defence to Sinisa Savic but Turner came out to meet him but only succeeded in half clearing back to FOTHERGILL who returned it first time into the net from 25 yards, past 2 men on the line. On 19 minutes the Blues came close to extending their lead. Again Fothergill was involved as Duffty picked him out with a fantastic cross-field ball from the left. Fothergill got the better of former Blues player Chris Hilton before sending over a dangerous cross which eluded Savic but a Steels defender came agonisingly close to putting it in his own net as it went inches wide of the far post. However, a minute laterand with their first decent attack, the home side were level with Hurlstone hitting a low 20 yarder which Kearney let slip from his grasp and over the line. This brought a spell of pressure from the home side and ten minutes later Steels took the lead with Ashton firing in a rebound from the edge of the box after an initial shot had been blocked by a defender. The Blues were now struggling to regain the initiative although both Rob Hanby and Evans were inches away from connecting with a Simon Collins free-kick given after another former Blues' player, Russ Green, had gone through the back of Savic. The Blues kept the home side more at bay in the second half but were still struggling to create much at the other end until a double substitution was made on 58 minutes with Lewis replacing Duffty and Zumrutel replacing Fothergill. It took Lewis barely a minute to get involved in the action as his first touch was to fire an 18 yard volley wide of the far post. Four minutes later Savic broke away down the right and picked out Collins in the box whose powerful 12 yard shot was brilliantly turned away by Turner. Zumrutel put a 20 yarder just wide of the left hand post on 65 minutes with Evans hitting the top of the crossbar with a header from Chris Gowan's left wing cross but the chances started to dry up until the last few minutes when Zumrutel put another 20 yarder wide of the left hand post and then Savic and Lewis caused havoc in the Steels box before Turner was forced to kick the ball out for a corner. Unfortunately, Collins' delivery was poor and the last chance was gone. Frickley Athletic : Kearney, Duffty (Lewis 58), Gowan, Hanby, Ogley, Collins, Fothergill (Zumrutel 58), Price, Evans, Savic, Foot. Unused Sub. Jones Referee :
