SPENNYMOOR UNITED 3-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC
The Blues' North East jinx struck again as they bowed out of the FA 'Umbro' Trophy at the hands of Spennymoor. The only change to the side was Rob Hanby, who was suspended, being replaced by Tommy Brookes.
Frickley got off to the worst possible start, conceding from a corner after just 7 minutes, Bennett being the scorer. Just 4 minutes later and Spennymoor increased their lead as Veart scored from close range with the Blues' defence all at sea. The home side continued to press forward as Frickley's players were continually out fought and the defence looked like there minds were somewhere else. Slowly Frickley managed to haul themselves back into the game with Nicky Cranston hitting the bar from 18 yards and then Steve Price was flattened in the box as he went for the rebound but claims for a penalty were waved away. Cranston then fired the loose ball wide. The 'Moors' were causing the Frickley defence moor problems when, on 41 minutes, they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Fox. Mark Wilkinson dived superbly to his left to save his third penalty of the season but the defence couldn't clear the loose ball and Carter fired in the host's third goal. On the stroke of half time Frickley were given a lifeline when Matt Clarke was hacked down just inside the box and CHRIS HURST sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot.
At half time Matt Wilkinson replaced Fox and Joe McAreavey replaced Brookes as Frickley looked to add more bite to the attack. On 49 minutes McAreavey ran on to a through ball from Price but his shot was blocked on the edge of the box by the keeper. On 71 minutes Clarke ought to have pulled goal back when he found himself unmarked 12 yards out in front of goal but instead of heading past the keeper he waited for the ball to drop and miskicked across goal. Two minutes later Edge cut in from the left and had a low 18 yard shot well saved by the keeper and then McAreavey hit a first time angled shot from on the right which beat the keeper but hit the side netting. The Blues' last chance came three minutes from the end when Price's 18 yard shot went narrowly wide.
