Tuesday 28th October - Frickley Athletic 3-2 Spennymoor United

With Chris Kamara opting to join NCEL side Goole (citing travelling as the reason) Phil Sharpe dropped Lee Pugh back into the right back position and Gerard McCargo came in down the right of midfield. Nick Richardson was fit to return to the midfield.

A rather scrappy opening 20 minutes saw very few openings for either side, although Mark Vickerage had a weak angled shot saved by Steven Tierney after 7 minutes and Richardson had a 20 yard shot deflected for a corner. On 22 minutes the visitors took the lead when Steve Preen lathed onto a through ball and stabbed the ball over Mark Samways as the Blues' defence stood appealing for offside. Five minutes later the Blues equlised when Pugh sent over a good cross from the right for LEE MORRIS who darted in front of his marker to head past Tierney at the near post. This seemed to visibly lift the Blues whose play improved. On 32 minutes Antony Jackson picked out Gary Hatto charging down the left with a great ball out of defence and Hatto beat his man before sending over a good cross which saw a defender clear for a corner. Shaun Varley replaced the ineffective McCargo after just 33 minutes. On 36 minutes Spennymoor almost took a bizarre lead when Jon Cullen spotted Samways off his line and attempted to lob him from just over half way but his effort drifted wide of the right hand post. A minute before half time Duncan Richards conceded a free-kick some 35 yards out which Craig Rand struck fiercely goalwards. Samways looked to have it covered but it slipped through his hands, against the left hand post and bounced in over the line. As the half entered stoppage time Vickerage was fouled down the left of the penalty area and Hatto whipped over the free-kick for MORRIS to head in at the far post.

Spennymoor had a good chance to re-take the lead just 5 minutes after the restart when Preen easily turned Paul Marquis inside the box and he turned and fired an angled shot across the face of goal. A minute later Vickerage did well down the right before laying the ball back to Richards whose 20 yard drive just cleared the bar. On 54 minutes Hatto saw his 25 yard free-kick brilliantly turned around the post by Tierney  whilst moments later Vickerage, Pugh and Morris combined for the latter to volley wide from 20 yards. Richardson then let fly from 30 yards but his effort cleared the bar. At the other end Cullen fired wide from 25 yards before the Blues finally got their winner on 73 minutes. Richards saw his angled 18 yard shot pushed around the post and from the resulting corner VICKERAGE turned the ball in from close range. The Blues had to endure a nervy last few minutes but deservedly held on for 3 crucial points.
