Saturday 17th July - Frickley Athletic 0-3 Sheffield United XI

DVD/Video available of this match. See Club Shop

The Blues went down to their second pre-season defeat in five days against professional opposition as the Blades’ Reserves side ran out comfortable winners at the Millennium Worldwide Stadium.

Frickley started well with goalkeeper Danny Haystead racing out of his goal to block at the feet of James Walker after just 90 seconds. Mark Vickerage then sent Walker clear down the left but as he cut inside Walker’s shot went straight across goal, failing to trouble Haystead whilst at the other end Wordsworth was twice forced to block at the feet of onrushing Blades' attackers and Steve Robinson cleared off the line from Billy Sharpe. Frickley went close themselves seconds later as Robinson’s deep cross from the right was headed against the post with Haystead rooted to the spot. Paul Shaw shot over from 25 yards for United before on 32 minutes Matthew Plant cleared off the line from Colin Marrison after Frickley’s goalkeeper Dean Wordsworth raced from his goal but was lobbed by Marrison. Just before half time Vickerage sent Robinson down the right but his cross towards Lee Pugh at the near post was expertly cut out by Benji Hill.

The Blades took the lead three minutes into the second half when Aaron Downes passed the ball back to Wordsworth whose clearance struck Sharpe and rebounded into the goal from 22 yards. Just after the hour the Blades increased their lead when Kevin Hurst fed substitute White  whose angled shot was parried by Frickley substitute Pitman but the ball fell kindly for White to cross to the far post where Travis Binnion headed into an empty net. A minute later the game was all but over as Steven Quinn curled in a 15 yard shot for the Blades’ third goal. Frickley manager Phil Sharpe made several substitutions before the home side went close on couple of occasions with Walker twice turning well on the edge of the box to go close, with his first effort clipping the outside of the left hand post and his second narrowly clearing the bar.
