Tuesday 13th November 2001 - Sheffield & Hallam Senior Cup 1st Round

SHEFFIELD F.C. 1-3 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

Gary Marrow took the opportunity to rest one or two players who have been carrying knocks recently as recent signing Fraser Sidebottom, from Stocksbridge PS, came into the defence whilst Paul Tittley replaced Rob Hanby. Graham Lewis, who will hopefully be fit for Friday's visit to Hyde United, was replaced with Gary Duffty.

Frickley started the game well with Carl Fothergill having a shot from 18 yards saved at the second attempt by the home keeper whilst on 12 minutes Martin Kearney was forced to make a fine double save to deny the home side. A minute later some good build-up play led to Fothergill shooting straight at the keeper from inside the box but within a minute the Blues took the lead. A long ball forward eluded the home defence and was seized on by FOTHERGILL who rounded the keeper to score from a narrow angle. The Blues seemed to relax a little after taking the lead and this allowed the home side to dictate most of the play until the Blues added a second goal on 28 minutes. Again FOTHERGILL was the scorer as he controlled Pete Myers' cross from the right before turning and firing into the roof of the net from 15 yards. Two minutes later Sheffield thought they had pulled a goal back but it was disallowed and then on 32 minutes Simon Collins headed narrowly over the bar from Chris Gowan's right wing corner. However, on 35 minutes the home side managed to reduce the deficit as a cleverly worked free-kick saw the ball crossed into the box from the left before being forced past Kearney from close range.

Sheffield pushed forward for the opening minutes of the second half but the Blues soon weathered the storm. On 53 minutes Fothergill had a glorious chance to claim his hat-trick when Collins picked him out superbly just six yards out but, instead of heading goalwards, he chose to try and chest the ball down and shoot but he was forced away from goal. The home side managed a few wayward shots from distance, along with a couple which Kearney dealt with easily before Collins drilled a low shot inches wide of the right hand post from 18 yards. But, on 75 minutes the Blues put the result beyond doubt. Gary Duffty's right wing cross was headed down to Craig Marsh to MYERS who slotted the ball home from 10 yards. The game was then effectively over as a contest with the Blues happy to play out time whilst the home side rarely threatened again.

The Blues now face an away trip at Mexborough Main Street in the Second Round which is to be played on, or before, Saturday 8th December.
