Tuesday 11th May - Frickley Athletic 3-2 Worksop Town

DVD/Video available of this game. See Club Shop

Phil Sharpe opted to start with Mark Hancock at left full-back with Steve Robinson returning to the midfield after completing his suspension. Gary Hatto and Dominique Krief had to be content with places on the subs. bench.

The Blues gave Worksop a scare within the first 30 seconds as Hancock brought the ball out of defence and played it inside to Nick Richardson, who in turn played it to Lee Pugh who fed the overlapping Duncan Richards. As Ricjards approched the Worksop box he played it inside to Pugh whose weak 25 yard shot almost fell to the prowling Lee Morris as 'keeper Ian Bowling collected the ball. On 4 minutes Richardson found Morris in space on the right and he cut inside before shooting over the bar from a tight angle. The Blues' bright start to the game was curtailed less than a minute later as Adam Muller raced clear of the blues' defence as Marc Shackleton came out to meet him. Muller went down under Shackleton's challenge and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty which Paul Sykes confidently converted. Minutes later Hancock's free-kick was flicked on to Morris who shot wide from 8 yards. The Blues were enjoying a lot of possession but Worksop started to look more threatening when they did attack. On 25 minutes Muller got clear down the right of the box but Shackleton pulled off a great one handed save and Aaron Downes hacked the ball clear. Four minutes later Shackleton punched away a 20 yard shot from Ryan Ludlam and minutes later caught a dipping 20 yard shot from Muller. The Blues pushed forward again as half time approached, with Dan Sheriffe intercepting a back-pass on 41 minutes but his ball across the box to Richardson was slightly behind him, enabling Worksop to clear for a corner. As the ball came in Hancock flashed an angled header just wide of the far post. Then, on 45 minutes, a ball into the Worksop box bobbled about just long enough for DOWNES to turn and lift the ball into the top right hand corner of the net.

The Blues started the second half well and went close on 57 minutes when Robinson sent Morris away down the right but his cross was blazed over at the far post by Sheriffe from 6 yards. Disaster struck 3 minutes later when a long kick up field saw Muller race clear and challenge Shackleton for the bouncing ball. Shackleton looked for all the world to be impeded as he failed to collect but the ball bounced kindly off Muller and ran into the net, with the referee waving away Frickley's protests as the goal stood. However, the Blues didn't have to wait long for an equaliser as on 70 minutes Robinson's long throw in was flicked on by Sheriffe for MORRIS to tap in at the far post. Three minutes later another long throw saw Sheriffe on his own 6 yards out with his back to goal but his header was straight at Bowling. Downes then headed a Morris cross over the bar from 8 yards before the all important winning goal came. Substitute Gary Hatto sent over a great cross from the left which picked out PUGH at the back post and he guided the ball past Bowling from 5 yards. As the game entered stoppage time Sykes broke into the Blues' box but just as he shaped to shoot Phil Lindley produced a fantastic tackle to dispossess him.
