Saturday 1st November - Frickley Athletic 5-1 Radcliffe Borough

The Blues rather comfortably saw off the challenge of 6th placed Radcliffe Borough as they eased through to the Second Round of the FA Trophy by five goals to one - and could have scored several more. With Nick Richardson cup-tied and Shaun Varley presumably injured Duncan Richards was moved to right full-back whilst Karl Colley came in up front and Mark Vickerage dropped deeper into midfield and Dan Sheriffe came in to play down the right.

Frickley started the game at a fairly high tempo and went close within two minutes but Lee Morris' dipping 25 yard volley just cleared the bar. Shortly afterwards Sheriffe fired narrowly wide from 20 yards whilst Radcliffe missed a good chance to take the lead on 17 minutes when some good work down the right by Chris Denham saw him find Simon Carden in the box but he turned and fired just over from 10 yards. Colley headed wide from a Hatto free-kick from the right as the Blues continued to look dangerous but a minute later Samways did brilliantly  to deny Denham after he broke clear with the Blues defence appealing for offside. Denham turned inside Richards before looking odds-on to score from just inside the box but Samways brilliantly blocked his shot. At the other end Vickerage saw his inswinging corner beat Danny Hurst in the Radcliffe goal but was headed off the line whilst the Blues had a let-off on 39 minutes. Antony Jackson made a mess of a cross-field pass to Phil Lindley, enabling Jody Banim to intercept and roll the ball across goal to the unmarked Denham but he miss-kicked from 6 yards, allowing Samways to get back and catch on the line. On 43 minutes the Blues managed to take the lead when Hatto sent over a cross from the left which was flicked on by Colley for SHERIFFE to stab into the net from 5 yards. Two minutes into first half injury time Banim headed straight at Samways from a Karl Margeson free-kick when he ought to have done better.

Within two minutes of the restart the Blues increased their lead when SHERIFFE met Morris' cross from the left with a terrific volley from 18 yards which flew past Hurst. This was the start of a purple patch for the Blues in which they could have scored several more goals. Within minutes Morris fired wide and Hatto had volley inches over the bar from 18 yards whilst on 52 minutes Morris saw header from Colley's cross caught on the line. On 57 minutes Colley released Morris down the right and he played the ball inside to Sheriffe who ran on to the edge of the box before seeing his shot take a wicked deflection off Steve Spencer and fly into the net past Hurst. The visitors made a double substitution, replacing Battersby and Sampson with Hopper and Luker and had a good chance to reduce the deficit on 65 minutes but Denham's angled shot was straight at Samways. On 75 minutes Spencer handled Colley's flick on to Vickerage as he prepared to break into the box with the referee awarding the free-kick which Morris took but Husrt saved it well. Vickerage then shot wide as he made space for himself inside the box whilst the Blues finally got their deserved fourth goal on 79 minutes when Hurst could only get a fingertip to Lindley's chipped cross from the left and SHERIFFE came in at the far post to blast the ball in. Morris then had a diving header from substitute Gerard McCargo's left wing cross go just wide of the far post whilst Radcliffe managed a consolation goal on 82 minutes when a free-kick from the right fell to Banim who beat Samways from 10 yards. The four goal lead was restored a minute from time when COLLEY found himself with the ball at his feet in acres of space inside the box and he picked his spot to beat Hurst.
