Hoping to repeat their FA Trophy success, Frickley let Cables off the hook when Craig Marsh ballooned a shot over from four yards and had to be satisfied with a share of the spoils.

It took time for both teams to settle and the first real chance did not come until the 24th minute when Blues keeper Adam Nicklin did well to grasp a header from Karl Bell after a home corner kick.

Jonathan Groome snapped up a loose ball five minutes later and rifled a 25 yard shot inches wide of the right hand post, while Lee Morris blocked a clearance from Colin Flood a minute later and the rebound was smothered by Prescot keeper Zak Hibbert under the bar.

A quick throw from Rob Pell in the 39th minute released Neil Towler whose angled 15 yards drive whistled just off target.

Cables almost snatched the lead two minutes after the interval when Marsh sliced a clearance after a cross from the left and the ball zipped over the bar, but the home side had better fortune in the 58th minute when a cross from the right was controlled by Eamon Price, who turned and beat Nicklin from 12 yards to break the deadlock.

Three minutes later, Scott Turner, who had just replaced Towler, put in a pinpoint cross from the right to Pell on the edge of the penalty area and he pulled the ball back for Groome to send Chris White down the left where he pulled the ball back for Lee Morris to head in an equaliser at the far post.

Frickley increased the tempo, Groome sending Morris down the right in the 78th minute and his low angled shot flew across the face of goal, and White snapped up the ball on the left two minutes later, cut inside and lashed a 20 yarder a whisker wide of the near post.

Cables were losing their cool and, when a corner was only half cleared in the 83rd minute, Morris put a low ball back into the penalty area which Marsh controlled, sidestepped a defender, but then got his foot under the ball and lifted it high over the target.
