Tuesday 4th November - Frickley Athletic 6-0 Penistone Church After struggling to see-off the challenge of supposedly inferior opposition in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup over recent seasons the Blues made no such mistakes this time as they comfortably beat Penistone Church 6-0. With Antony Jackson suspended Karl Colley dropped back into the centre of the defence whilst Nick Richardson returned to the midfield with Gary Hatto dropping to the subs bench and Michael Blythen started up front alongside Lee Morris and Mark Vickerage. Vickerage showed the Blues intentions when he fired inches wide of the left hand post after just 25 seconds. However, VICKERAGE didn't have long to wait to open the scoring as he confidently stroked the ball past Lengthall from 15 yards after 14 minutes after some good build-up play down the left. The visitors then showed that they too could be dangerous when they had a 16 yard shot deflected for a corner. But on 20 minutes the Blues extended their lead when Dan Sheriffe and Blythen combined well outside the box for BLYTHEN to fire in via the crossbar from 18 yards. Gerard McCargo then saw his chip drift agonisingly wide of the left hand post. On 25 minutes MORRIS intercepted a pass just outside the box and brilliantly curled in an 18 yard shot which went in off the far post. A minute later the Blues were nearly caught out when Simon Sykes' free-kick from some 35 yards out on the right evaded everyone in the Blues' box and the ball just went wide of the left hand post. Damien Ives then put a 20 yarder just wide of the left hand post whilst minutes later Mark Samways did well to save a low shot from John Beggs. A minute before half time the Blues notched their fourth goal as BLYTHEN headed in at the far post from Vickerage's cross from the right. Right on half time Andy Hibbert hit a great 18 yard volley which Samways pushed around the post. Gary Hatto replaced Paul Marquis at half time, with Phil Lindley moving to centre back. On 49 minutes Blythen went close to getting his hat-trick when his 18 yard shot was pushed around the post. A minute later Morris saw his curling 20 yard free-kick headed off the line whilst on 56 minutes Lengthall came out of his box to clear with Sheriffe returning it on the volley from 40 yards but Lengthall got back to catch Sheriffe's effort. A minute later Morris sent over a cross from the right which the Penistone defence failed to deal with, leaving HATTO to fire home from 12 yards. On the hour BLYTHEN completed his hat-trick as he turned inside a defender inside the box and fired past Lengthall from 15 yards. Vickerage then deserved better as he wriggled past a handful of defenders inside the box only to fire straight at Lengthall and then in the last minute Sheriffe won the ball just inside his own half before pushing it past the last defender and beating him for pace to sprint clear and then lob the advancing Lengthall but his shot clipped the outside of the far post.
