PARKGATE 0-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC

Frickley progressed to the Semi Finals of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup with an injury time goal from substitute Joe McAreavey but, perhaps more importantly, suffered yet more injury problems ahead of Saturday's League game against high flyers Stalybridge Celtic. McAreavey had replaced Mark Ogley on the hour who was carried off following a particularly nasty challenge by Parkgate's no.10 and this was after another over-the-top challenge by former Blues' player Ian Dring in the first half had also left Ogley needing treatment. Dean Jones was also forced out of the game to be replaced by goalkeeper Andy Carney in the 82nd minute after he had tried to soldier on for while but was unable to see out the match. Other players took knocks against a physical Parkgate side and only time will tell now as to who will be fit enough to play on Saturday.

The match itself was a rather poor affair after a bright opening by Frickley. Gary Ormston put a 20 yard shot narrowly wide after good work by Duane Beckett gave him the chance on 6 minutes and shortly afterwards Alex Willgrass put a 30 yard shot inches wide of the left hand post. The visitors went close on 24 minutes with Dring seeing a dipping shot drop just over the bar but, apart from the rash challenge by Dring on Ogley very little of note occured for the rest of the half.

The second half saw Rob Hanby send Leroy Chamber clear down the right and his cross found Ormston on the far post but his volley was blocked by the home 'keeper and the danger cleared. Dring then went close at the other end with a shot from the edge of the box which missed the left hand post by inches before Hanby hit the underside of the bar with a header which was then cleared despite appeals for a goal. Parkgate's no.10 took Ogley out of the game on 58 minutes and received only a yellow card. Lee Stratford was then booked for dissent when the referee insisted on moving the free-kick back six yards from where the offence took place and Stratford proceeded to kick the ball away. (Obviously this offence is now just as bad as committing a serious foul!) McAreavey came on to replace Ogley with Hanby dropping back into the defence. There were then scrambles in both goal areas before Carney was forced to replace Jones in the centre of the defence. In fact Carney it was who was instrumental in the winning goal. Four minutes into added time Carney played the ball in to Ormston just inside the box with his back to goal. He then fed McAREAVEY along side him who fired into the top of the net from 12 yards. Carney then almost grabbed a second for Frickley when he met a corner by Ian Edge but his header was cleared off the line.

So the Blues progress, but at what cost? Gary Duffty, Steve Price, Chris Hurst and now Mark Ogley and Dean Jones all look like missing Saturday's game.
