Tuesday 26th December - Ossett Town 2-0 Frickley Athletic
Two goals in ten minutes straight after the interval brought
to an end Frickley's unbeaten run of six Unibond Premier matches and gave
Ossett the spoils.
With Steve Robinson and Steve Heath both suspended, manager
Billy Heath brought Danny Moore in at right back and gave recent signing
Carl Giblin his debut in the back four.
It was in midfield that the Blues were lacking, having to
weather an early storm in which Andy McManus tested Jon Hood with a header
in the first minute, while Carl Fothergill went close.
Frickley should have had a penalty in the ninth minute, Moore
picking out Paul Palmer who flicked the ball inside, only for Neil Ashley to
be flattened as he raced into the penalty area to try and connect.
A curling cross by Palmer was headed behind by Robert Tonks
as Lee Morris closed in after 24 minutes, while a free-kick by Martin
Thacker two minutes later produced a glancing header from Richard Tracey,
which Jon Worsnop spilled but it went behind for a corner.
Danny Walsh had a shot handled in the 29th minute, Tracey
putting the rebound just wide from 20 yards, and a cross from Ashley in the
36th minute found Tracey who cut inside and had a shot well saved by Worsnop.
A first time 25 yard volley from Rob O'Brien was superbly
saved by Hood in the 43rd minute.
Three minutes after the interval, Andy Haywood beat the
off-side trap and controlled the ball well before steering a ten yard shot
past Hood to open the Town account.
There was no opposition in midfield ten minutes later when
the home side switched the ball to the right and an angled drive from Carl
Fothergill struck the far post and went into the net off the back of Hood.
Ossett were buzzing, James Walshaw testing Hood with a 25
yard drive on the hour before putting a spectacular overhead kick just wide
a minute later.
The Blues nearly reduced the arrears in the 63rd minute when
a cross from Morris was headed just wide by Scott Turner, and they were
awarded a penalty five minutes later after Thacker was brought down.
Paul Palmer hit the penalty well but Worsnop guessed
correctly, flinging himself to the right to block the ball.
In the 80th minute, Hayward got clear again but Hood dived at
his feet to smother the ball, while Worsnop raced to the edge of his area to
grasp a free-kick from Moore under pressure from Morris.
