FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 3-0 MOSSLEY (After Extra Time)

Three goals in extra time saw the Blues progress to a home Fourth Qualifying Round tie with Hyde United on 28th October as they rode their luck against a lively Mossley side.

The first effort at goal came after 5 minutes when Gary Duffty picked up a loose ball in his own half and ran at the Mossley defence before feeding Craig Goodyear, who had made a great run, but his first time shot from the edge of the box was straight at Allen. Almost immediately Mossley broke down the left and Mark Wilkinson could only watch as a fierce 15 yard shot was deflected for a corner. Rob Hanby had the ball in the net after 13 minutes, knocking a cross by Martin Fox in with his arm, and received a booking for his efforts. The majority of the play seemed to be confined to the middle of the field with Mossley looking quite dangerous on the break though Goodyear's left wing corner was headed inched over the bar by Hanby after 34 minutes and Goodyear had a deflected 20 yard drive which had Allen scrambling but in the end he saved easily. On the stroke of half time Mossley had a shot deflected for a corner from which Garside shot straight at Wilkinson.

Mossley started the second half the better of the two sides and went close on 56 minutes, with Willcock beating Mark Lafferty on the edge of the box before having his shot blocked by Brendan West. Dicken then broke clear, although he looked well offside, but Wilkinson brilliantly saved his low shot. The Blues then started to come back into the game more with chances being created at both ends. On 71 minutes Duffty was played in by Hanby but the pass sent him wide, enabling a defender to get back to block his shot with Allen beaten and shortly afterwards Hilton's free-kick on the right was flicked on by Hanby to Joe McAreavey whose close range shot was blocked by Allen. At the other end Wilkinson pulled off a fantastic save with his legs to deny Evans who was left in the clear after a poor pass across the defence was intercepted. On 80 minutes Ian Edge picked up a loose ball on half way on the right hand side, beat 2 challenges and cut inside but his low shot was saved by Allen. Wilkinson was again called on to deny Brennan when he was forced to kick clear and Edge had a chance to snatch a winner in the 89th minute when he combined with Hanby to find himself in space inside the box but his final shot was blocked by Allen's legs.

Extra time saw the Blues create more chances and they finally took the lead on 97 minutes with HANBY forcing the ball in from almost on the line following a corner from the left. Three minutes later Brookes shot over from 20 yards before McAREAVEY scrambled the ball over the line after Allen, at full stretch, dropped a cross by Brookes. On 106 minutes Brookes picked up a stray pass a fired a shot in from 26 yard which hit the outside of the post as Frickley took control. Mossley did have a chance to pull a goal back on 108 minutes but the forward shot straight at Wilkinson when left unmarked 8 yards out. Then, in the final minute, Frickley added a third when Hanby released Duffty down the right hand side of the box and his pinpoint cross was headed in by McAREAVEY.
