Tuesday 25th September - Frickley Athletic 0-0 Matlock Town
Although gaining only a UniBond Premier Division
point, Frickley produced a much improved performance when they entertained
fifth-placed Matlock.
The return of Steve Robinson and Chris Hilton
after suspension, along with Chris Gowen and the home debut of Neil Redfearn,
provided the foundations for a team display brimming with skill and
determination.
Once again there was a lively start, Nathan Hotte
going close with a 20 yard drive in the fourth minute, while Richard Tracey
combined well with Chris White on the right five minutes later before testing
Martin Taylor with a low 18 yard left foot drive.
Town's first serious raid in the 12th minute saw
Steven Taylor pick out Simon Barraclough whose shot was blocked at point blank
range by Jon Hood, while Gary Webster headed just over after another probing
attack in the 33 minute.
Immediately the ball went to the other end, Hotte
having a shot blocked and Tracey scooping the rebound over, although it took
another good save by the Town keeper to hold a 35 yard free-kick from Redfearn
two minutes later.
Chris Hilton split the Matlock cover with a
pinpoint crossfield pass on the stroke of half-time, which was snapped up by
White and he cut inside before seeing Martin Taylor smother his 20 yard drive.
The second half saw the Blues increase the tempo,
Hotte getting clear on the hour down the right and having a 15 yard
angled drive well held, while a penetrating attack from the home side led to
Chris Gowen lifting his shot over from eight yards five minutes later.
Gowen put two other close range efforts off target
before Frickley had a let-off in the 78th minute, Matlock appeals for a
penalty when Laurence Hall was brought down by Phil Lindley being ignored by
referee Mick Bell.
Back came the Blues, Redfearn rattling the bar
with a 30 yard drive in the 81st minute, and Richard Medcalf forcing a full
length save from the keeper two minutes later.
At the end of normal time, Dean Jones was
penalised on the edge of the penalty area, but Jon Hood confidently caught the
resultant free-kick from former Blues player Neil Ashley to make sure there
was no last gasp mistake.
