Saturday 27th January - Frickley Athletic 1-2 Marine
A reshuffled Blues had skipper Steve Kennedy in
midfield, while Ben Eastwood and Scott Turner came in for Richard Tracey and
Neil Ashley, but they hadn't time to settle before being dealt a body blow.
Just 54 seconds had elapsed when Nicky Young, who
was at least two yards off-side, raced onto a through ball and slotted a 15
yard drive past Jon Hood. The silence which preceded the award of the goal was
replaced by a barrage of disagreement on it being given.
Paul Palmer put a first time 20 yard volley just
wide in the sixth minute as Frickley tried to respond, and a free-kick from
Lee Morris was turned off target by goalkeeper Andy Banks eight minutes later.
The Blues deservedly got on terms in the 25th
minute with a candidate for goal of the season. Morris knocked a ball on the
left inside to Paul Palmer who ran past two defenders and struck a 35 yard
piledriver which zipped past Banks and into the roof of the net.
Straight from the restart, Frickley snapped up the
ball and Banks did well to turn a 15 yard shot from Kennedy off the line,
while Scott Turner went close with a fine effort seven minutes later.
Mr Sutton, who received little help from his two
assistants, turned down home appeals for a goal on the stroke of
half-time. Chris Hilton cut inside and hit a shot which Banks managed to
parry, and the keeper got his hands to Hilton's effort from the rebound but
the ball appeared to be a foot over the line before Adam Farley hoofed it to
safety.
Ben Eastwood had a shot well held by Banks in the
52nd minute as the Blues resumed with the same fluency, and Marine could
hardly believe their luck when they regained the lead in the 59th minute.
Jon Hood went up for a centre from the left
and was pushed but caught the ball and edged the erring Marine attacker out of
the way. Hood was putting the ball down for a free-kick when he realised that
the referee had awarded a penalty against him.
Steve Hussey made no mistake from the spot.
A 30 yard drive from Eastwood was slightly off
target in the 65th minute, while Kennedy extracted another fine save from
Banks with a powerful header after a Morris free-kick after 79 minutes.
The Marine defence lived dangerously but managed
to hold out with Frickley's woes increasing when they were reduced to ten men
in the 86th minute as Kennedy was sent off for a second bookable offence.
