Saturday 22nd October - Frickley Athletic 0-0 Marine

This game is available on DVD/Video - See Club Shop

The Blues bounced back from Tuesday evening's disappointing FA Trophy exit to give a much improved performance against third placed Marine in an entertaining game which was only lacking in goals.

With Gary Marrow away on business Mark Ogley took charge of team affairs and was forced into making two changes with Matt Daly and Martyn Woolford both ruled out through injury. Ryan Golden replaced Woolford whilst new signing Nicky Heinemann came into the side at left back with Calum Selby moving into midfield whilst Phil Lindley partnered Steve Kennedy in central defence.

The Blues started well and had their first chance as early as the fourth minute when Selby threaded the ball through for Ashley Scothern but his angled shot from 8 yards lacked power and was comfortably saved by Andy Ralph. Minutes later Alex Callery cut in from the right to float the ball to the far post where Chambers headed the ball inches wide of the post. However, Marine had a good chance to take the lead when a long high clearance saw Carl Nesbitt clear down the right. As he waited for the ball to bounce on the edge of the box Heinemann got back and tried to head the ball back to Gary Ingham but Aaron Rey had anticipated this and latched onto the lose ball but Ingham blocked his effort with his legs. As half time neared Marine when close again when a right wing corner was glanced goalwards at the near post by Nicky Young with the ball being headed clear by Selby who was positioned just behind Ingham almost on the line. The Blues immediately counter attacked with Lee Pugh and Scothern combining well down the right as Scothern won a corner which Chambers headed just wide of the far post.

Within minutes of the start of the second half Scothern worked himself a chance when he peeled away to the left of the box to pick up a pass from Pugh and skipped past a defender but his left-footed shot from 10 yards was sliced wide of the left hand post. Chambers then missed a glorious chance to score when unmarked as he met a brilliant cross from Heinemann but his header from 8 yards flew well over the bar. After Marine replaced Rey with Ged Courtney the visitors again went close as Young and Lee Parle combined for the latter to burst clear in the box but his close range shot ricocheted across the face of goal off Ingham's head. Ogley then brought on Andy Evans for Chambers. Heinemann was the next to threaten the visitors goal as he picked up a half cleared ball to run at the last defender on the edge of the box and fire in a powerful shot which Ralph spilled but was able to collect the loose ball before a challenge came in. Ralph then blocked a Pugh effort as Scothern played the ball inside the right full-back as he spotted Pugh's run. As time started to run out Scothern played the ball from the left between two Marine defenders for Golden to break into the box but as he faced the last defender 8 yards out he stabbed his shot straight at Ralph.
