Saturday 20th September - Marine 2-1 Frickley Athletic Although Kieran O'Brien was fit enough to play, Phil Sharpe was without the services of the injured Karl Colley and Mark Vickerage. Dan Sheriffe partnered Lee Morris up front, whilst new signing from Glenavon Gerard McCargo replaced Stuart Preston down the left. The Blues took the lead with the first attack of the game on 3 minutes when a great ball from the left by McCargo to SHERIFFE saw him head the ball in past Marine left back Dave Nolan and beat him for pace before lifting the ball over the advancing Peter Crookes and into the roof of the net from 16 yards. Marine's Steve Whitehall had a shot charged down in the 8th minute. The Blues went close again on 22 minutes when Chris Kamara's free-kick from the right fell to Lee Pugh but his shot on the turn through a crowded box was tipped around the post by Crookes. Three minutes later Marine had a goal disallowed for a foul on Samways as he tried to claim a high cross. McCargo then lobbed a speculative shot straight at Crookes from 22 yards before a good run down the left by Sheriffe saw him curt into the box before laying the ball back to Phil Lindley but his miss-hit shot was straight at Crookes. Immediately after half time Marine had a chance to equalise but John Stannard shot straight at Samways from close range. The game turned on an incident on 54 minutes when Paul Marquis, who had already been booked, conceded a free-kick just inside the Frickley half. Marquis, rather foolishly, took his time to retreat away from the ball with a Marine player kicking the ball at him to emphasise that he had stopped a quick free-kick being taken. The referee immediately produced a second yellow card and hence a red. Before the Blues had a chance to reorganise Marine's free-kick was floated into the box where it was headed back for Whitehall to head in from close range. Sharpe brought on John Drennan in place of Gary Hatto, with Drennan partnering Antony Jackson in defence. On 69 minutes Marine substitute Paul McNally headed wide when well placed whilst on 73 minutes Morris stabbed wide of the left hand post from a Kamara cross. On 84 minutes Marine scored their winner when McNally rose unchallenged to meet a right wing corner and powered a header past Samways. Frickley Athletic : Samways, Kamara, O'Brien, Pugh, Jackson, Marquis, Lindley, McCargo (Preston 80), Morris, Sheriffe, Hatto (Drennan 56). Unused sub. Joblon. Att: 493 Ref : Mr A> Taylor (Manchester)
