Saturday 8th November - Frickley Athletic 4-3 Marine The Blues made it 18 goals in the last 4 games to run out 4-3 winners in a thoroughly entertaining end-to-end game which could easily have finished 8-7 to either side! Phil Sharpe started with the same side the beat Radcliffe last Saturday, with Nick Richardson on the bench. The Blues started off where they left off against against Penistone by immediately going on the attack. After the Blues forced a corner n only the third minute Paul Marquis flicked on Gary Hatto's right win cross but the ball bounced agonisingly wide of the far post with no-one able to get the vital touch. Minutes later Karl Colley did well down the left to win the ball and he then sent over a cross which was too deep but Dan Sheriffe retrieved it and chipped the ball in towards the near post but Lee Morris was just unable to reach it. Then on 14 minutes the Blues finally took the lead when Colley out-muscled Gary Randles down the right to send over a strong cross which HATTO met first time some 16 yards out to lash the ball past Crookes. Three minutes later the referee adjudged that Duncan Richards had handles the ball as he brought it out of the penalty area and decided to point to the penalty spot. Mark Samways guessed right and dived to his right to block Steve Whitehall's spot-kick and then recovered to tip over Tommy Taylor's follow-up header. On 19 minutes Marquis saw his header from a Hatto free-kick fly straight at Crookes whilst at the other end Samways was forced to tip over an inswinging corner from Paul proctor. The Blues continued to look dangerous with Dan Sheriffe volleying wide of the right hand upright from 20 yards but disaster struck on 29 minutes when Phil Lindley's back-pass to Samways was well short, leaving Dean Thurston to pick up the loose ball and steer the ball past Samways into the net from 18 yards. Marine suddenly sprung to life whilst the Blues seemed to lose confidence as on 32 minutes the defence failed to clear a throw-in and Taylor stole in to kook the ball into the net past a stranded Samways. From being all Frickley it was now nearly all Marine. Will Dolan should have made it 3-1 on 34 minutes when he blazed over from 6 yards when it looked easier to score whilst on the stroke of half time Antony Jackson blocked another close range shot from Dolan. The Blues started the second half as they had started the first and should have equalised on 50 minutes when Mark Vickerage got clear of the defence and pushed the ball past the advancing Crookes but his rushed, angled shot rolled inches wide of the far post. However, the Blues drew level 4 minutes later when MARQUIS rose to meet Hatto's feee-kick from the right just before Crookes and the ball looped into the net. Immediately Marine responded with Dolan seeing his low 25 yard shot well saved by Samways but on 61 minutes the Blues went back in front. Vickerage was fouled on the edge of the box out to the right and Hatto's free-kick was met by Colley with MORRIS claiming the last touch as the ball went into the net. On 72 minutes Dolan got away down the right, despite being several yards offside, and sent over a cross which Thurston knocked over the bar from close range. At the other end some good play between Hatto and Lee Pugh down the left saw Pugh break into the box before seeing his low shot saved. Marine's Michael Ellison then saw his powerful 22 yard shot through a crowded penalty area fly just wide of the left hand post with Samways rooted to the spot but on 79 minutes the Blues' defence again failed to clear their lines, leaving Neil Black the easy task of turning to fire past Samways from 6 yards. The game looked destined for a draw until on 86 minutes Hatto fed MORRIS down the left and he cut inside and rode two weak challenges before curling a magnificent shot into the top right hand corner past Crookes - a goal worthy of winning any game, at any level!
