Tuesday 11th December 2001 - UniBond League Cup Group Match

FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 4-2 LINCOLN UNITED

With manager Gary Marrow unavailable due to work commitments the side was looked after by Mark Ogley and his father Alan. Goalkeeper Chris Howe was brought in from Halifax Town whilst two of the Blues' Under 19 side, David Smith and Andy Betts, both made their debuts. Simon Collins and Andy Evans were both rested whilst Rob Hanby was still not fit.

The Blues had a let off after just 40 seconds when Lincoln's Parkinson found himself in space in front of goal but Howe reacted well to save his weak shot. Just two and a half minutes later the Blues took the lead when CARL FOTHERGILL found himself in space inside the box following a pass from Scott Collins and he lifted the ball past the advancing keeper into the net. The visitors levelled matters on 16 minutes when Bird turned well on the edge of the box before shooting into the bottom right hand corner from 18 yards. The Blues soon regained the lead as on 27 minutes Paul Tittley was fould just outside the box and STEVE PRICE stepped up to score with a low, curling free-kick which keeper Curry could only help into the bottom corner. Four minutes later Curry had a rush of blood as he chased his own defender in the box before pouncing on the ball as the defender tried to dribble it clear. The referee immediately awarded an indirect free-kick to the Blues some 16 yards out and to the right of the box. Gary Duffty touched the ball to SCOTT COLLINS who lashed the ball gigh past Curry into the roof of the net. On 39 minutes Craig Marsh's overhead kick sent Duffty into space down the right. He immediately fed FOTHERGILL who rounded Curry before slotting the ball in from a tight angle.

Two minutes into the second half Fothergill had a glorious chance of getting his hat-trick but Curry saved his weak shot from the edge of the box. The visitors looked more lively after the break with the Blues, perhaps confident they had done enough in the first half, quite content to let them attack. Lincoln hit the side netting on 62 minutes before reducing the arrears five minutes later when Drinkall scored from close range after Howe had saved his initial header. Two minutes later Gray broke clear in the box but Howe came out well to take the ball away from him as he looked certain to score. On 74 minutes the Blues came within inches of putting the match beyond doubt as Collins played a great ball down the left to Pete Myers who cut inside before shooting just wide of the right hand post from 15 yards. The Blues were almost made to pay as six minutes later Parkinson hit the bar with a deft lob but a minute later Myers had a goal ruled out for offside.
