Saturday 10th November - Frickley Athletic 0-1 Leek Town
Robbed
of a deserved point by a smash and grab goal in the fourth
minute of stoppage time, Frickley need urgent action if they are to
survive in the Unibond Premier Division.
None of the team can be faulted for their enthusiasm or stamina, but
they have got to get some pattern in their play otherwise they will
continue to be the 'wooden spoonists' for the rest of the campaign.
The Blues should have put the result beyond doubt with some continued
pressure after the interval.
After an angled shot by Ryan Morton was diverted behind in the 61st
minute, the flag kick saw Lee Morris, Andy Hayward and Richard
Marchant, all have efforts turned off the line before the ball skidded
wide.
A corner kick from Chris White in the 71st minute was met perfectly by
Dean Jones at the far post but his downward header was somehow
blocked.
More bad luck was to follow five minutes later when Ashley Flynn beat
visiting keeper Mat Cooper with a rising shot, only for it to strike
Richard Marchant on the line and rebound to safety!
There was a bit more zip in the home side from the start, Marchant
bursting into the penalty area in the sixth minute and seeing Cooper
save his angled shot at the second attempt, while Danny Walsh had a
shot blocked in the 13th minute, the rebound dropping to Dean Jones
whose 18 yard drive was well held by the keeper.
A last ditch tackle from Phil Lindley prevented Dean Canning from
giving Leek a shock lead in the 14th minute, and Chris Gowen cleared
an effort from Nicky Prescott a minute later.
Neither side managed to stamp their authority on exchanges before the
interval, but the Blues resumed strongly, Marchant getting clear in
the 48th minute only to be foiled by another fine save from Martin.
After their avalanche of escapes, the Town defence was thankful to
Martin again in the 85th minute when he managed to cling onto a 25
yard volley from Morris after a probing pass by Jones had put him
through, although there was an escape for Frickley a minute later,
Darren Alexander ballooning over from 12 yards with only Jon Hood to
beat.
A rare Town attack led to them getting the decider, a free-kick being
awarded on the left hand side of the penalty area and Stave Brannan
drilling in a low effort which Canning touched and diverted into the
net off an upright.
Flynn beat two men and struck a strong shot which Martin turned over
the top to prevent the Blues getting on terms.
