LANCASTER CITY 0-1 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC
A solitary goal by Chris Hurst two minutes into the second half was enough to earn the three valuable points required to maintain UniBond Premier Division football at Westfield Lane next season and send the travelling 40 or so Frickley supporters wild with delight at the final whistle.
Frickley were without the injured pair of Mark Tyrell and Dean Jones who both failed to recover from injuries sustained in Tuesday's win over Barrow. In their absence Lee Stratford came into the centre of defence with Ian Edge starting in Tyrell's left wing-back role. Rob Hanby went close to opening the scoring on 5 minutes but Lancaster 'keeper Thornley saved his header following a free-kick. Ten minutes later Hanby went close again after breaking from midfield and exchanging passes with Leroy Chambers before shooting straight at Thornley from 20 yards. Chris Hurst then headed over from Chris Hilton's cross following some good play down the right before Lancaster's no.10 turned and shot straight at Mark Wilkinson from close range at the other end. As the half came to an end, news filtered through that both Leek and Colwyn Bay were winning so Frickley had it all to do in the second half.
The start of the second half saw the all important break through make on 47 minutes when Chambers sent over a cross from the left which Hurst headed goalwards. The ball beat Thornley but rebounded back off the crossbar back to HURST, whose momentum had carried him forwards, and he managed to stretch and squeeze his header in from a tight angle. Two minutes later Duane Beckett had a chance to ease the nerves a little more when he ran at the home defence, twisting and turning as he made his way into the box but instead of shooting he elected to try and beat one man too many, allowing Thornley to smother at his feet. Most of the chances continued to come at the home end with Lancaster rarely threatening. Beckett fired over from 15 yards after Chambers had teed him up and then Chambers himself volleyed over from 18 yards after brilliantly flicking the ball over a defender. A minute later, on 75 minutes Hurst fired into the side netting from just inside the box but the travelling Frickley supporters had to endure a tense last minute as Phil Brown conceded a free-kick on the left of the box and Thornley came up to join the attack. Thankfully, when the kick came over a Lancaster player attempted to throw the ball into the net, thus conceding a free-kick. No sooner was this taken than the referee blew the final whistle and Leek Town were condemned to UniBond First Division football next season.
