Tuesday 5th November - FA Trophy 1st Round Replay Frickley Athletic 2-1 Kidsgrove Athletic (aet) Manager Phil Sharpe started with the same side that took to the pitch at Kidsgrove on Saturday, although Remo Nesa, Jon Wordsworth and Mark Hine all took their places on the subs bench. The game kicked off around 20 minutes late as Kidsgrove were held up in traffic but it was the visitors who started the more lively and they took the lead with their first attack on 11 minutes. A good break down the right saw the ball cross into the box where Darren Twigg headed on to the unmarked David Nolan who steered the ball past Mark Samways from close range. Ronnie Morgan then turned and shot just wide from 20 yards before the Blues started to ease themselves into the game. On 22 minutes Curtis Bernard fed the overlapping Chris Gowen whose 25 yard shot went wide of the right hand post. Some good football down the left then led to Andy Evans seeing his 18 yard volley caught under the bar by Chris Grassie. A minute later Mark Hancock sent over a good cross from the right but Bernard couldn't get a good enough touch on it to trouble Grassie. Then Paul Marquis stabbed a shot wide of the left hand post from close range following another Hancock cross. On 36 minutes Evans picked up a long ball down the left and turned inside a defender but Grassie pushed his powerful shot from just inside the box round the post. The resulting corner was half cleared as far as Hancock whose dipping volley clipped the crossbar. Remo Nesa replaced Marquis at half time, with Hancock dropping back into the defence. Within sixty second of the restart Evans shot wide of the left hand post but on 49 minutes the Blues finally had some luck when Nesa lifted the ball over the defence for Bernard to run on to. Bernard's 1st time shot was blocked by Grassie but the ball ricocheted off BERNARD and into the net. Evans then cut in from the right before shooting against the outside of the right hand post with Grassie beaten but Kidsgrove showed they were still in the game on 55 minutes when Morgan received the ball in a good position outside the box but Hancock held him up and he dragged his shot wide of the right hand post. Samways was then forced to pull off a good save to block an angled drive before Twigg shrugged off Gowen's challenge to break clear in the 73rd minute but he dragged his shot wide of the left hand post. At the other end Evans had a good chance when Bernatd headed down to him but Evans could only stretch and lift the ball over Grassie and the crossbar from 4 yards. The Blues hit the woodwork again on 79 minutes when Nesa met Hancock's left wing corner with a powerful header that cam back off the crossbar whilst Nesa shot wide on 86 minutes. Extra time was virtually a non-event with neither team looking like they had really got it in themselves to kill the game off. 10 minutes into the first period Hancock played Bernard through but he slipped under pressure and the chance was gone whilst at the end of the first period Samways saved a strong 25 yarder from Nolan. Seven minutes into the second period Evans was fouled just outside the box but Hancock's free-kick was straight at the wall. Then, in the 15th minute, Grassie dropped a high ball into the box and JACKSON rammed the ball in via the left hand post to earn the Blues an away trip to Vauxhall Motors in the next round.
