Saturday 24th November - Frickley Athletic 2-1 Kendal Town
One swallow doesn't make a summer, but this Unibond Premier Division
victory could be the springboard to Frickley's climb up the table and
helped narrow the gap between them and fellow strugglers Kendal.
A goal down after only 68 seconds, the Blues battled to get on terms,
only to have goalkeeper Jon Hood sent off but the ten men were made of strong
stuff and turned the tables to deservedly lift their first
scalp.
Michael Cole sprung the off-side trap in Town's first attack and,
while Hood came out to block his shot, the ball rebounded straight to
Alex Taylor who drilled into an empty net from 25 yards.
The home side should have equalised two minutes later, Chris White
picking out Lee Morris whose shot was diverted behind and, from the
resulting corner kick, Phil Lindley blasted wide at the far post.
A long throw from Steve Robinson was collected by Morris in the 12th
minute and he hit an angled 20 yard drive which David Newnes smothered at full
stretch, while the Kendal keeper had to produce another fine dive to turn away
an 18 yarder by Danny Walsh after 34 minutes.
Hood sent Morris chasing after his long clearance five minutes later,
only for Newnes to parry his shot and Craig Marsh put the rebound just
over the target from a tight angle.
Referee Andy Morbin, who had booked the Blues Jonathan Groome and Lee Morris,
along with Kendal's Ian Kilford, added Chris Hilton and Andy
Leigh to his list of cautions after a mini-fracas heralded the start
of the second half.
Town almost increased their lead in the 54th minute, Kilford striking
a volley which the diving Hood managed to fingertip to safety, while
the home side equalised a minute later.
A deep cross from White was headed back towards goal by Robinson and, while
Newnes managed to parry the ball, Groome rammed in the rebound. Another fracas
in the 68th minute in the Frickley penalty area saw Hood get his marching orders
and Town skipper Tony Hallam yellow
carded.
Robinson took over between the posts, and the Blues turned the tables
in the 73rd minute, Morris chasing a ball on the right and hitting an
angled shot which took a deflection to loop over Newnes and just
inside the far post.
New signing Neil Towler had replaced Marsh, but was left in a lone
attacking role as the home side packed midfield and defence to snuff
out any threat of Kendal grabbing a late equaliser, a ploy which they
successfully achieved.
