Saturday 12th April - Frickley Athletic 2-1 Ilkeston Town
This deserved victory over Ilkeston saw Frickley move to
11th position in the UniBond Premier Division and practically guarrantee their
Unibond Premier Division status. While not absolutely safe, it would take some highly
unusual results for the Blues to finish in the bottom three although they
appeared to be giving the Town attack an opportunity to show their mettle in the
opening exchanges. Fortunately Jon Hood was in fine form, with Jonathan Groome,
Dean Jones and Phil Lindley, also snuffing out some threats although there was a
let off when Ross Gardner rattled the bar with a 25 yard free-kick in the 25th
minute and Lee Adam was just over from 15 yards three minutes later. Frickley took the lead on the half hour with a penetrating
raid, Danny Walsh finding Chris Davies who turned the ball inside to
Neil Towler and he beat his marker and drilled a left foot drive in from the
edge of the penalty area. A free-kick from Chris Gowen dropped to Towler in the 42nd
minute and, after his first effort was blocked, he rifled the rebound only a
whisker wide. Ilkeston tried to get on terms straight after the break,
Nathan Winder heading just wide in the 48th minute and Lee Adam going close with
a neat flick six minutes later. Chris Hilton picked out Towler in the 55th minute and he
cut inside before striking an angled left foot shot just off target, while
Towler then picked out Danny Walsh who lobbed Phil Senior but the ball landed on
the roof of the net. Town got on terms in the 62nd minute when a corner was only
half cleared and Matt Baxter volleyed in from 30 yards. Their joy was
short-lived, with the Blues regaining the advantage two minutes later. Lee Featherstone was penalised for hands, and Chris Davies
curled a 25 yard free-kick round the defensive 'wall' and just inside the left
hand post. A long throw from Hilton in the 71st minute was flicked on
by Rob Pell to Towler whose powerful header was tipped over the top by Senior. Jon Hood fingertipped away an angled shot from Martin
Carruthers, but it was Frickley calling the tune, Towler getting clear in the
84th minute but being foiled by a point blank save from Senior, while Chris
Gowen whipped over a pinpoint cross a minute later and Towler headed wide at the
far post.
