FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1-0 HYDE UNITED

A solitary strike from Rob Hanby six minutes before half time was enough to see the Blues through to the First Round Proper for the first time since 1988. Most of the game was played in driving rain which the Blues played against in the opening half.

Hyde forced a couple of corners in the opening minutes as they tried to use the wind to their advantage with long balls over the home defence but slowly Frickley began to get into their stride. The Blues went close to opening the scoring on 9 minutes when Chris Hurst played Gary Duffty through on the right of the box. He beat the onrushing keeper Bennett with his low shot but a defender managed to clear off the line. After 20 minutes Brendan West got on the end of a free-kick on the edge of the box but his shot was deflected straight into Bennett's hands. Frickley were starting to dominate play but Hyde's front two were looking sharp on the break and on 22 minutes Lee Wilkinson broke clear but he shot staright at Mark Wilkinson from outside the box. Shortly afterwards Yeo headed narrowly over the bar following a cross from the Hyde right by Matty Taylor but then on 39 minutes the all important goal came. A free-kick from 35 yards out was headed down by Hurst to Duffty who in turn teed up HANBY to fire a low shot past Bennett from 12 yards. Two minutes later Bennett did well to collect a cross off the head of Ian Edge after a good cross by Nicky Cranston on the right as the Blues looked to add to their tally before the break.

The beginning of the second half saw the Blues continue where they left off, probing the Hyde defence but they had a let-off on 55 minutes when Wilkinson latched onto a long ball and hit a first time shot from 25 yards which went wide with Wilkinson off his line. Three minutes later Cranston and Scott Collins played a 1-2 on the edge of the box which resulted in Cranston's low shot being turned around the post. On 63 minutes Hurst headed a cross by Collins into the top corner but the effort was ruled out for offside whilst at the other end Banim shot wide from 20 yards following a free-kick. Hyde threw on their three substitutes as they pushed men forwards to try and grab an equaliser and Steve Richards replaced Collins with Matthew Wilkinson to add an extra defender to protect the lead which paid off as the Blues defence defended resolutely to deny Hyde any clear cut chanced despite the possession they had in the final fifteen minutes. In fact the closest anyone came to scoring a second goal was at the other end when Cranston blocked a clearance by Bennett on 85 minutes but Bennett recovered well to smother Cranston's shot.

In the end a thoroughly deserved win which sees the Blues make the trip to Northampton Town in three weeks time. Now we need to start and pick up some League points.
