Saturday 5th October 2002 - Hyde United 2-3 Frickley Athletic

There were several changes to the line-up which faced Bradford Park Avenue last Tuesday, with most of them enforced. Mark Samways, Scott Kerr and Remo Nesa were all injured so Richard Siddall, Ryan Williams and Phil Sharpe all came into the side with Mark Hine returning to the subs bench.

The opening exchanges saw the home side enjoy the majority of the possession whilst the Blues were unable to create much at the other end. It came as no surprise when Hyde opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Richard Eyre cut in from the right and beat Siddall with an angled shot from close range. The Blues had their first sight of goal on the half hour when Andy Evans hooked a Mark Hancock free-kick over the bar but  minutes later it should have been 2-0 when Jay Anthony found himself in a great position on the edge of the box but he shot wide of the right hand post. The home side continued to look sharper with the only chances created by the Blues being a 20 yard shot by Williams which was deflected wide by a diving header and a 25 yard free-kick which Chris Gowen put over the bar.

Just three minutes after half time the Blues found themselves 2-0 down when Sharpe conceded a free-kick which was taken quickly with the ball fed through to Anthony who got there fractionally before the onrushing Siddall to poke the ball into the net. This prompted the substitution which changed the game. Craig Marsh replaced lee Morris with marsh moving into the centre of defence, whilst Antony Jackson moved up fron tot partner Andy Evans. Almost immediately the Blues pulled a goal back with EVANS latching onto a long ball to get between two defenders and list the ball over the advancing Peter Crookes into the net from 25 yards. At the time the goal seemed a mere consolation but the combination of Jackson and Evans unsettled the Hyde defence and when Sharpe joined them up front it showed the Blues were giving it it real go to get back into the game. On 56 minutes Gowen's corner from the left was headed straight up into the air and Sharpe was the first to react but his header over Crookes was headed off the line. Now the game had swung the other way with the Blues looking the side more likely to score but they had to wait until the 81st minute to do so. Jon Wordsworth's clearance found Nigel Hemstock sprinting clear down the left and as the Hyde defence appealed in vain for offside HEMSTOCK composed himself and shot past Crookes from the edge of the box to level the scores. Minutes later Jackson's over-head kick from 15 yards from an Evans flick on went just wide of the right hand post with Crookes beaten but as the game entered injury time the Blues snatched the winner. Evans did well as he broke into the box from the left and exchanged passes with Jackson before having a little luck for once as the ball bounced off a defender and back to EVANS who drilled a low shot past Crookes from 12 yards.
