Saturday 2nd March 2002 - UniBond Premier Division

FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 0-1 HUCKNALL TOWN

The Blues suffered a disappointing home defeat against a quickly improving Hucknall Town side after conceding the only goal of the game in poor fashion just after half time.

Frickley had a set-back before the game when it emerged that Hucknall had forced Mark Place to agree not to play against them before they released his registration before signed for the Blues. This forced Steve Price to play a centre-back in place of Place.

Hucknall started well, forcing a couple of corners in the opening minutes but the Blues soon started to come into the game. On 7 minutes Leroy Chambers turned Stuart Hicks outside the box and took the ball into the box down the left before centering to Andy Evans who dummied, allowing the ball to run to Simon Collins but Paul Mitchell made a great last ditch tackle on him. A few minutes later a slip by a Hucknall defender let in Evans down the left of the box who decided against shooting from a tight angle. Instead his cross eluded both Chambers and the onrushing Matt Russell. The Blues continued to create chances with Collins creating space for himself on the right hand edge of the box before firing an angled drive wide of then right hand post. The Blues should have taken the lead on 25 minutes when Chambers fed Gary Reece on the right. His cross was half blocked by a defender, with the loose ball falling to Russell who sent over a great volleyed cross which dropped invitingly between two defender for Evans who was waiting just six yards out but he scuffed his shot wide of the left hand post. Almost immediately Hucknall went close with Gary Ricketts shooting narrowly over from just inside the box. Then, almost two minutes into first half stoppage time, Rory Prendergast skipped past two challenges down the left before sending over a cross which Collins converted in style from near the penalty spot. Unfortunately, Andy Evans was adjudged offisde so the goal was wiped out.

Seven minutes after the break Hucknall took the lead when the Blues repeatedly failed to clear from their own box. Prendergast's attempted clearance ricocheted off a Hucknall player to Ian Duerden who was stood on his own to the right of the goal. Steve Price did well to crowd him out but after several attempts to clear by Price, Jones and Reece, Hucknall's Mitchell lifted the ball over Wilkinson from 10 yards. This prompted the introduction of Graham Lewis in place of Chris Gowen and this almost brought an immediate response. After a Blues attack was only partly cleared Gary Reece knocked the ball back into the box where Collins weaved his way through several challenges before miss-kicking from 12 yards with only the keeper to beat. On 70 minutes a Prendergast cross from the left was headed away from Chambers by Hicks only as far as Russell who hit a well-controlled low volley from 18 yards which Young blocked well and then recovered quick enough to pounce on the loose ball before Chambers. It then became apparent that this wasn't going to be Frickley's day six minutes later when a free-kick by Price found it's way to Evans on the left of the box but his goalbound shot struck Collins and rebounded to safety. At the other end Ricketts found himself in space some 10 yards out but as he looked to pick his spot Wilkinson pulled off a great save to push the ball round the post. Right at the death Evans had two chances when first he headed over from a corner from the right and then, two minutes into stoppage time, he headed straight at Young from 6 yards from another Blues' corner.
