Tuesday 19th August - Hucknall Town 3-0 Frickley Athletic

With Paul marquis missing through injury Mark Lafferty came into the defence alongside Steve Robinson, who returned after suspension and Antony Jackson, with Phil Sharpe playing Duncan Richards and Kieran O'Brien as wing-backs. Lee Morris dropped into midfield whilst Mark Vickerage and Paul Hurrell started up front.

After a bright opening 10 minutes by the Blues the home side started to dictate the play. First of all a deep free-kick from the left struck Gary Ricketts and rebounded over the bar whilst on 12 minutes Danny Mayman played in Danny bacon but Mark Samways was quickly off his line to smother at the strikers' feet. On 15 minutes Lafferty handled just outside the box, leaving Carl Adams to fire the free-kick over the bar. However, on 18 minutes Hucknall took the lead when Bacon got goalside of Robinson inside the box and, despite the ball bouncing awkwardly, he placed an angled shot past Samways. A minute later Vickerage had a good run which saw him set up Morris but his powerful shot from 15 yards was charged down and Phil Lindley put the rebound straight into the keepers arms. On 20 minutes Hucknall doubled their lead. A deep free-kick from the right was headed back across goal for Nathan Winder to knock in from close range. Three minutes later Morris went close for the Blues when he headed just wide of the right hand post from an O'Brien free-kick. Then Eichards played the ball in to Hurrell on the edge of the box who turned and hit a first time shot inches over the bar. Samways was then forced to save well from Jon McCarthy before on the half hou some good play between Chris Kamara, Vickerage and Hurrell saw the latter get clear of the defence only for 'keeper Stuart Nelson to block his 18 yards shot with an outstretched arm and a defender then headed the rebound out for a corner.

The second half started off much more scrappy than the first. Sharpe introduced two substitutes on 58 minutes, replacing Kamara and Lafferty with Gary Hatto and Curtis Bernard as he pushed more players forward. On 68 minutes Hurrell again went close when Bernard flicked the ball on to him and he hit a great 1st time volley from 20 yards which sailed a foot over the bar. Two minutes later a Blues corner was cleared only as far as Morris who hit a stunning 25 yard volley which Nelson did well to turn away for a corner. This was perhaps the Blues best spell of the game but it soon came to an end as Hucknall swept downfield and added a third goal. Robinson committed a bad foul to the left of the box and the free-kick found Craig Gaunt who knocked the ball in from close range. The Blues still kept looking for a goal and went close on 77 minutes when a corner was cleared as far as Richards who hit a rocket-like shot from 25 yards which just missed the left hand post. Two minutes later Morris headed an O'Brien corner back across goal to Vickerage but the young striker could only head over the bar from 6 yards.

In the end the strength and experience of Hucknall's rather more expensive side was quite evident to see.
