Tuesday 18th November - Frickley Athletic 4-5 Hucknall Town

The Blues went out of the UniBond League Cup at the Second Round stage after losing a nine goal thriller at Westfield Lane in stoppage time. Frickley now enter the President's Cup at the last 16 stage.

Phil Sharpe made one change to the side that lost at Gainsborough last week, bringing in Dan Sheriffe in place of Nick Richardson whilst Lee Morris took the captain's armband instead of Antony Jackson.

After initial pressure from Hucknall in the opening minutes the Blues went close through Lee Pugh but his18 yard volley went wide of the left hand post. On 8 minutes Mark Vickerage curled in a corner from the left which was cleared off the line but PHIL LINDLEY volleyed it into the roof of the net from 15 yards. This seemed to sting the expensive Hucknall side into action and the equalised just 5 minutes later as a quick break saw Paul Moore hold off Lindley's challenge before scoring with an accurate angled shot from 16 yards. Three minutes later Hucknall took the lead as Moore finished off a good move by firing into the roof of the net from 10 yards. However, the Blues kept plugging away and they got their reward on 25 minutes when Hucknall 'keeper Stuart Nelson dropped Vickerage's left wing corner and KARL COLLEY slammed the ball in from almost on the line. A minute later Colley and Hucknall's Simon Brown both received a yellow card following an incident after the ball had gone - an incident which wouldn't have happened had the referee penalised Brown for his initial foul! On 29 minutes Samways tipped a 20 yarder from Gary Rickett's around the post  whilst on 33 minutes Danny Bacon saw his header from Moore's left wing cross loop over Samways and back off the crossbat. A minute later, however, Moore seized on a flick to break clear of the Blues defence and capitalised on Samways' hesitancy to score Hucknall's third. As half time approached Vickerage saw his angled drive hit the side netting but in the 45th minute Colley was brought down by Brown as he looked to get clear to latch on to a pass from Morris. The referee promptly sent off Brown, leaving the visitors to play the remainder of the game with 10 men.

The Blues started the second half strongly with Morris having a angled shot dropped by Nelson who recovered to dent Vickerage whilst on 48 minutes Gary Hatto's right wing corner found Morris whose volley was punched away by Nelson only for LINLDEY to volley into the far corner of the net from 20 yards. The joy was short-lived, though, as 5 minutes later the defence failed to clear a cross from the right, leaving Rickett's with the easy task of scoring from 6 yards. On 75 minutes Colley seized on a long ball from Jackson and slotted past the advancing Nelson but the referee ruled that Colley had handled the ball and disallowed it. The Blues got a lifeline on 79 minutes when Vickerage was rather clumsily pushed to the ground in the box and HATTO confidently converted the penalty (click here to see video clip of Hatto's penalty). The Blues now seemed to have settled for extra time but as the clock moved into stoppage time Roy Hunter let fly from 25 yards and despite Samways getting his fingers to the ball it still nestled just inside the left hand post. It was a cruel blow to a Blues side who had competed well with a side who will no doubt finish well inside the top six but were made to pay for defensive lapses.
