Saturday 30th August - Frickley Athletic 0-0 Hednesford Town A game
full of skilful passing, leading to end to end exchanges, lacked only one thing
- a goal - and resulted in Frickley and Hednesford sharing the spoils. Had there
been more accuracy in finishing, the result would have provided a double-figured
total and Blues manager Billy Heath will be looking for a way to end the
scoring drought which is taking some of the shine off an encouraging start. A long
clearance by Adam Nicklin in the second minute was flicked on by Rob Pell to
Neil Towler, who turned his man before drilling an angled 20 yard shot across
the face of goal. Nicklin
got down to smother a low shot from Mark Briggs in the 17th minute, and did well
two minutes later to catch a point blank header from Ross Dyer at the far post. The home
side thought they had scored after 20 minutes, Towler playing a slick one-two
with Pell before beating Stuart Brock with a 25 yard scorcher but the ball came
back off the bar, and Pell than sprayed a 20 yarder across the face of goal two
minutes later. There was
another let-off for Town in the 29th minute, Brock slicing a clearance and Pell
heading the ball back to Towler but he screwed his shot wide from 15 yards. A corner
kick dropped to Ross Draper who lashed a shot over from ten yards for the
visitors, while Frickley responded, a long free-kick by Antony Jackson being
headed down by Pell and Scott Brough fired a first time effort into the side netting. Hednesford
seemed sharper straight after the interval, Dyer racing onto a through pass in
the 49th minute but lobbing both Nicklin and the goal before he completely
missed the target again three minutes later after a low cross from Louie Brown. Danny
Walsh picked out Towler in the 64th minute, oinly for his shot to be blocked,
while Towler ran onto a pass from Lee Morris in the 76th minute and fired
goalwards but the ball bounced off Brock's legs. A cross
from Walsh in the 80th minute was parried by the visiting keeper and Brough's
shot from the rebound was turned off the line by Danny Harvey. Elliott
Durrell fired wide after being set up by an accurate cross from Anthony Maguire two
minutes later, and the tale of missed chances continued to the end, Jackson
crossing in the 90th minute for Morris to launch a flying header
which soared over the bar. Frickley
