Tuesday 9th October 2002 - Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup 1st Rnd

Frickley Athletic 3-1 Harworth Colliery

Due to injuries Phil Sharpe was down to his last 13 fit players, and had to name himself on the bench despite being unwell. Despite this setback, the Blues ran out comfortable winners and should really have scored more.

The Blues took the game to Harworth right from the off with Mark Hancock heading Mark Hine's right wing corner wide of the near post after just 4 minutes Just seconds later Andy Evans ran onto a ball from Chris Gowen to hit a powerful first time angled drive which beat the stranded keeper, Ahmed, and rebounded off the left hand post. However, the Blues had a shock on 16 minutes when Harworth took the lead. Jon Wordsworth's under-hit back-pass was sliced clear by an under pressure Richard Siddall, straight to Harworth's Gareth Davies who took a copuple of strides before shooting past the hastily back-pedalling Siddall from  almost 30 yards. But the lead lasted barely two minutes before LEE MORRIS hit a great 18 yard drive which gave Ahmed no chance to level the scores. The Blues then threatened to run riot. A good cross from the left by Evans saw Ahmed pull of a great save to block Antony Jackson's close range header whilst Morris somehow managed to hit the right hand post from around 2 yards out from the rebound. Minutes later good work down the right by Morris saw substitute Duncan Milligan take the ball on and send over a cross to the near post which Jackson controlled well but Ahmed blocked his close range shot. On 32 minutes Harworth threatened to retake the lead when Davies tried to break clear but a great tackle from Peel took the ball off him as he shaped to shoot from the edge of the box. Almost immediately Milligan sent over a cross from the right which saw Jackson's near post header blocked by Ahmed but the ball only came out as far as GOWEN who drilled a low 15 yard shot into the net.

Within 5 minutes of  the restart the Blues effectively sealed the win when PEEL hit a great shot from 22 yards which drifted over Ahmed and dropped under the bar to put the Blues 3-1 up. On 54 minutes Paul Burke laid the ball off to Morris who fed the overlapping Gowen to break into the box but he shot wide of the left hand post from a good position. Harworth went close a minute later when Darren Boyd shot over from 20 yards whilst on 56 minutes Morris headed on to Burke who broke into the box but Ahmed blocked his effort and then gathered a flick from Burke on the line when the ball was swept back into the danger area. On the hour mark Burke collected a long clearance from Siddall and broke into the box and went down under a challenge but claims for a penalty were waved away. On 61 minutes Evans flicked  Hine's ball in on to Milligan on the right whose cross beat Ahmed and came back off the top of the crossbar. Evans then headed over following a cross from the left by Gowen before Evans headed Hine's long ball from half way into the path of Morris bu the ball got stuck under his feet and Ahmed blocked his shot. Then on 82 minutes Morris dragged an angled shot wide of the left hand post from inside the box. Siddall was forced into action a couple of times in the dying minutes but dealt with things comfortably whilst in the last minute Gowen was booked for swearing at the referee when the comment came from a supporter stood not far from him!!
