Saturday 11th September - Guiseley 0-0 Frickley Athletic

A vastly improved Blues performance saw them gain a richly deserved point in a fairly even contest. Caretaker manager Gary Hatto made changes to the starting line-up by moving Phil Lindley to left full-back and dropping Wayne Benn into the centre of defence. James Walker gained his first start of the season as part of a three-man forward line.

The Blues started the game strongly, with Mark Vickerage twice getting behind the home defence in the opening 2 minutes, the second time he latched onto a long ball from Steve Robinson, cut in from the right and saw his low shot saved on the line by John Lamb. Minutes later Nathan Hood picked up a loose ball some 25 yards out and let fly with a speculative shot which flew wide of the left hand post. The Blues enjoyed most of the play in the early stages but slowly the home side started to come more into the game. Just before the half hour Bruce Hogg got goal-side of Benn but Mark Shackelton deflected Hogg's angled shot wide of the post. Mark Stuart then went close for Guiseley but his 20 yard shot just cleared the bar. Just before half time a free-kick from half way was flicked on to Scott Jackson but his angled volley was punched away by Shackelton.

Early in the second half Shackelton was called into action again as he pushed away a 12 yard volley from Stuart. Just after the hour Vickerage ran at the home defence before laying the ball off to Lee Pugh but his 20 yard shot was gathered at the second attempt by Lamb. Benn then sent over a dangerous free-kick from the left which Lamb collected at full stretch before Shackelton was again in the thick of the action as he pushed away a fierce 30 yard drive by Peter Sumner following a Guiseley free-kick. The Blues had the better of the final few minutes and went close to snatching all three points at the death but Walker's 18 yard shot was pushed around the post by Lamb.
