Tuesday 4th March - Guiseley 1-1 Frickley Athletic Another last gasp effort led to Frickley being pegged back
for only a share of the spoils in the Unibond Premier Division with Guiseley
getting on terms in stoppage time. The Blues snatched the lead in the 86th minute with a gem
of a goal, only for the home team to get a fortunate equaliser in the
second minute of stoppage time, although on the plus side, Athletic have now
gone eight games without defeat. Chris White released Neil Towler down the left in the fifth
minute but his dangerous cross was cut out by James Cotterill, while former
Frickley player Lee Pugh pounced on a defensive error a minute later and drilled
an 18 yarder just over the bar. A long clearance from Steve Robinson in the 13th minute was
seized by Lee Morris and he had a strong 20 yard drive diverted behind. The
corner kick was only half cleared, Danny Walsh crossing from the right and
Morris putting a glancing header a whisker wide. When a cross from Jonathan Fernandez was only half cleared
by Robinson in the 21st minute, Pugh collected the ball but saw his effort from
the edge of the penalty area diverted off the line. Steve Robinson overlapped on the right in the 31st minute
and whipped in a cross which Jonathan Groome got to and flicked just wide
at the near post from eight yards. A quick break by Guiseley down the left on the stroke of
half-time led to Mark Betts having a low shot well held by Jon Hood. The second half saw defences reluctant to release their
grip and several promising raids were snuffed out before they got within
shooting distance although Towler set up Groome in the 61st minute but he lifted
his 25 yard drive over the top. Piotr Skiba dropped a deep free-kick by Chris Gowen in the
80th minute, only for the home defence to clear Scott Turner's shot from the
rebound off the line, while Lee Tuck put Jonathan Fernandez clear at the other
end three minutes later with Hood blocking his shot. The deadlock was broken in the 86th minute when Rob Pell
got up to head down the ball to Lee Morris who struck a 30 yard blockbuster
which looped over the Guiseley keeper and just under the bar. Steve Robinson, attempting to shepherd the ball back to Jon Hood, slipped and allowed Aaron Wilford to nip in and round the keeper before slotting the ball in an empty net.
